Hi all,l have started keeping Belgian bantams,l have 3 hen and 2 cocks, they have supplied me with one or two eggs a day,l want to breed my bantams, what do l do? l have left the eggs in the nest boxers at the moment,5 in one and 4 in another,as l keep lovebirds, canaries and parakeets, these birds do start sitting on the eggs after a number is laid,is this the right way for my bantams,l don't like the idea of eating the eggs,if they are fertile, can any one help.regards mick

get 10 plastic eggs and leave in nest, mine wouldnt sit untill the had too many to cover so i put 10 plastic small eggs in dark nesting place, she was on them by end of day. then you can put her eggs back in
i think you ned more hens though with 2 roosters

Thanks for your reply,l think one cock is very calm and he dont go near the hens much and both cocks get on well, although the main cock attacks any thing that moves, yes l will get a few more hens,so you take the eggs away every day and replace with a plastic one,do you store the eggs some where cool, how many eggs do you let your hens laid,l have seen 2 hens laying, would it be okay to let them just laid and hope after say 8 or 10 would the hens sit, they have made nests and they seem to look after the eggs, thanks again, regards mick

If you really want to hatch chicks you may have to invest in an incubator. No chicken can be guaranteed to go broody & keep sitting. At the moment some of mine think about it then change their minds & I have a few 'broody' breeds. I, personally, wouldnt try hatching any eggs that were over 10 days, but some people do with success. Still waiting for my little ones to go broody :)

Thanks for your reply,l dont want to start putting eggs in a incubator, what l think l will due like my other birds,l will number the eggs so you advice about no more than ten can be kept to,l will as there are three hens l will see if one does go broody,l am not too concerned about getting chicks yet so l may just wait and see, thanks again,l will try to up date if there is good news, regards mick

the broodies have no roosters so i bring in fertil eggs for them i take their eggs for eating.
