i have a light sussex and a leghorn both 25 week old,the sussex laid her first egg today aned now my leghorn seems to be acting strange, also she is showing no signs of getting ready to lay,her comb is still small and pink.when i got her she was in poor condition,is it possible that something could be missing in her diet that is not allowing her to mature.

If they're living together and one is OK, it's probably not the diet. It is unusual for a Leghorn not to be laying at 25 weeks as they are usually very precocious. I'd suggest she either had a setback in the rearing or she is not 25 weeks old. Either way, I think you'll just need to be patient though sometimes, if the setback has been severe, they never lay to their full potential.
Strangely, my young Leghorns are backward this year too.

When you say 'when I got her she was in poor condition' in what way? Did you get her from the same place and at the same time as the LS? If so, how did they compare when they were younger? - ie, has the LS gone on to mature normally from 20 weeks onwards, whilst the Leghorn stood still?

Probably hard to know by comparing them how much weight she has put on, as Leghorns have so much lighter bodies than LS by the time they come into lay, but do you think she has put on enough weight and grown at all in the last few weeks?

and did you worm them when they arrived? Failure to grow might indicate infestation holding her back.

got them at same time from the same place, the leghorn was quite scruffy and had been pecked by roosters, she has def grown alot since i got her,but what a meant was she showing no signs of laying, her comb is no different than when i got her,she is also very timid, its a struggle sometimes to pick her up,yet there no problem with thE LS,had her 16 weeks now,yes they have been wormed.

If you've had her for 16 out of 25 weeks, she must have had good care and feeding for most of her growing period. Maybe she's just a late bloomer! You'll just have to be patient, hard though this may be. Being a flighty breed, and with her history of stress in her first home, it's not surprising that she's not keen on contact at present. LS are typically much easier to get hand-tame, but the Leghorn will respond if you keep quietly rewarding her with little treats of corn etc, and may well settle down once she is in lay, whenever that may be - although she may delay it until next Spring at this point in the year. Let us know how you get on.

thanks a will ,also may i add my ls laid her second egg today ,it was a double yolker and no shell(just a membrane) should i worry or is this normal

They quite often lay funny eggs, or lay irregularly, when they're just getting going. She'll most probably be fine in a week or two once she has a bit more practice. If it was a double yolker it was probably two days' worth in one go, and she just didn't quite get the hang of coating it with shell!

If she was 'pecked by roosters' before you got her, that would be enough to cause her a setback at that age.
