It's only been 3 days since I lost my beautiful Dottie... and I'm itching to get a couple of new ladies.
But thought I wuold put it to the vote on here initially if you don't mind as I am very conscious it was myco I lost her to and an unsure as to how it may have affected my other girls / affect potential newcomers....
What do you think?
PS: My 6 year old son wants white birds.... any suggestions???
 
Just what would make me happy about a couple of new girls in your situation-----make sure all birds have had adequate anti myco treatment , treat everywhere (house,run,feeders etc etc ) a few times with effective anti microbial. Then Id wait about 3 weeks (the hard bit! ) Find some birds that you have no reservations about at all , from a small breeder ,breeding from their own stock not importing growers ,all kept clean etc. Then bring them home and keep isolated from your own birds for a month to give time to ensure both groups of birds are well and give the immigrants time to build up some immunity to your own flock bugs. As long as you are carefull I dont see any problems! If anyone so much as sneezes Id stick the whole lot back on anti bios. White birds???--White Sussex , Marans ,Hybrids,Silkies , Orpies--loads to choose from. Good luck , Im sure all will be fine as youve thought about it rather than rushing in headlong with no thought! :-)08 Ros
 
I've just noticed I expected you lot to be physcic - white birds!! What I was actually meaning was my little man has asked to be involved with the new birds and he is 7 on 27th Feb (Peebles show!) and was sort of ish planning on looking at picking up a couple then for him to handle / look after etc... Recommendations for an "easy" bird.... I was thinking bantam Brahmas, or more Pekins but I have been very unlucky with them so far.... His only specific was White....

Ros - I disinfected and "steam cleaned" their house on Saturday, still to scrub out run but I disinfect every time I clean so residual infection should be minimal... I have got all girls on Tylan just now will do it for a week then ACV for a week then we will see..... My worry is isolation for new birds I will really struggle with it, I could do about 2 weeks but that would be about it as I will need to halve the existing girls run (they get supervised outings regularly so shouldn't get too stressed but its just incase they have to stay in for a full day for what ever reason......
If I was to tell you how I integrated my last lot you would faint.... only from reading this site do I realise how bad /ignorant my breeder was and how lucky I have been.... :-)07
 
Pekins are tough little birds and great for kids , maybe you have been unlucky with them--e.g.my frizzled Pekin -Chicken George -now over 15 years, still producing chicks and normally virtually bald being 'double frizzle' gened. They are my favourites. Caution re buying from a show-you haven't seen conditions they have come from also at show in contact with hundreds of birds and so potentially exposed to a lot of nasty bugs!
 
Hi Aileen, Glad to hear you are thinking of getting more chooks. I think as long as your remaining chickens are now free from sneezing etc it should be ok. I think Ros has made good points about keeping the new ones isolated at first. I have certainly learned my lesson in that respect. As for type of chook to get......I'm biased as I love the Pekins. They are great for kids and come in white......... what more could you want :lol:
I also think it probably is good to get them in spring as they will have all spring,summer and autumn to get established before having to face your cold winters up there.
 
|Ros has said it all wait a few weeks to make sure your girls are fit and healthy then get them from a breeder where you can see what kind of conditions / health the parent birds have. Keep them quarantined from your own stock for a minimum of 4 weeks

Podstable has said it all :-)17 Booted bantams have great temperaments too, as have seramas, dutch & as you know pekins.
 
Hi Aileen,

Have you seen the outdoor runs they are selling in Pets at Home? Whilst I wouldn't recommend any of their Chicken Houses :-)07 (one puff of wind or a rainy day & it would be fit for nothing) but the small run which they are selling for any pet seems OK as a temprary enclosure. Might be worth a look.
 
Thanks I will go have a look. I don't mind paying bout 30 or so quid if I am having to keep separate for as long as a month... would a rabbit/guinea pig ark suffice... please feel free to say no I a, just looking for options...
 
I dont know how big these arks are: it can be quite small but make sure there is quite abit of head room, enough for good air circulation, otherwise you could have problems with condensation and it all getting wet from their breath at night when you close them in. (these chooks must be heavy breathers :lol: )
Can't wait to hear what you get. By the way, don,t think global warming has hit Essex either with some of the rubbish summers we've been getting recently! Ah well..........theres always this one to hope for :)
 
I have found this which I thought quite good with a bit of adaption.... It would be for thru the day use only I have a carrier which I would use for night time (stick them in the shed...)Just means they would get a bit of shelter if it rained.... And on the plus side I could use it for my guinea pigs on sunny days when my ladies are happily integrated.......
Yes I am going on about it but preparation is key!! :D :D
CtheB - I probably won't be getting anything until early April (bummer...) as I want to give my girls time in case of residual bugs, I also have a man coming on Saturday to help design a new house for them so will need to get them settled in that and I have to squeeze a week in the sun 23-30th March as well so...first week April I will be loo ing if anyone wants to PM me with bantams they will have ready at that point.

Hi Aileen, I think it would be fine for day use with the door left open; not enough headroom though if you were to shut it at night. When we bought 2 Pekins to introduce to our others we put them in a temporary house my hubbie knocked up. In the morning they came out all wet and not at all well, I brought them into the house for the day and luckily they recovered. It certainly is a learning process.................
Hope your remaining girls are ok.
