    Help bleeding toe

Just cut a couple of nails that where getting too long to walk on and the silly girl moved, so drawn blood.. I've put antibacterial powder on it and tried putting purple spree on, but the bleeding keeps washing it off. How long will it take to stop bleeding :(

    Easiest chicken introduction ever

Well, Lilly and Crumpet where popped into the main ark on Friday night. We had a pretty quiet day yesterday with Tik and Tak upstairs and the other two down due to the rain and a few spats when the older two came down to eat. BUT after a scrabble at bedtime and a decent spat between Tak and...

    Stupid question - electric fencing

Ok, so just bought poultry netting with 'hot gate' for the garden. Bought it so I could put the ark onto a fixed run for the winter and give the girls enough room to run on the grass when I'm not there and when I introduce them to the new pair next week, BUT How on earth do you open the hot gate...

    National Poultry Show

Advise please :) Would really like to go to the national show in daventry on 15/16th nov, but never been before. My main interest lies in pekins (obviously), but also picked up interest in faverolles via foxys lovely birds. no idea what's there or what else to expect. I'll be going on my own, so...

    Introducing 3 to 2 existing

Off to get two more girls to keep my two warm & snuggly this weekend :) BUT...... If i get greedy and fall in love with three, will it be a rough ride for the 'odd' one? My ark is suitable for 6, so space is not an issue, just dont want to make life difficult for one.

Please spare a thought for my little Nancy

finally think I'm going to lose my little mud monster - Took to her bed overnight and is refusing to leave, pale head tucked under her wing snoozing. For the first time ever I think shes given up (not me) and she seems at peace, so think its time to say goodnight. :(

    Nancy troubles

Sadly" Nancy is in trouble again. She has been leaking water from her vent for over 10 days now. She is alert, eating, doing all her 'happy to be alive' stuff, but has a constantly wet back end and it's starting to cause her to pull her own feathers out. She is pooing normally through the...

    Do I have red mite?

Interesting issue, not sure if I have red mite or not. My ark is regularly dusted with diotom, cleaned out weekly and I also carefully use insecticide based powders and ivermectin to control lice (as my pekins are prone to them due to the wild bird population in the garden). I seem to have a...

    Nancy's on the brink again

Here we go again..... Nancy is wheezing and hardly able to breath today, no sneezing, no runny eyes or puffed face etc. just struggling to breath. EVERY time I relax, she sneaks up behind me and blows me away with another health scare? GOD she's a pest! She's laying, plus the photos I posted...

    Options for giving chickens antibiotics

Had a query from a girl at work (seeing as I'm the office chicken nutter). :) Her mum has some chickens that may need antibiotics. I've recommended the vet as always, but as she's on her own, wondered how she'd be able to administer antibiotics if prescribed. My thoughts would be to isolate...

    Spring is finally here

(Sigh) :) Just spent the first full day this year pottering in the garden with the girls. Sun was shining, Nancy spent most of it spread eagled on the lawn sunbathing, Tricksy following my every trowel movement to pounce on the goodies below and my complete loony of a chook Fifi rushing hither...

Sagas of nancy (maybe not for breakfast viewing)

The sagas of Nancy continue! Nancy is fighting fit thank goodness (or as well as she's been), fully feathered and currently beling wormed as per usual spring routine. The other 2 are both laying and as healthy as ever, but Nancy laid this overnight. Her poo is generally more fizzy than the...

    Hatching the natural way

Hello, Would really like a couple of new girls this summer and knowing the issues with introducing new chooks, thought I might give one of my girls some eggs to hatch so they all rubbed along from the start. I've currently got 3 pekins. questions I have are - can I raise chicks in a basic rabbit...

The Chicken Vet - Pharmacy opened near Exeter

For anyone in Devon / Exeter area, a bit of interesting news? St David's Poultry Vet have just opened a pharmacy at the back of the industrial estate opposite Darts Farm near Topsham. Popped in there tonight and it sells all the chicken vet range, plus extras (like ivermectin) and also does...

Moving to fixed base system for winter

My 3 girls are soggy and constantly dealing with wet muddy feet. Now Nancy is well again and so stress not such an issue, I'd like to move the girls from a grass base in the ark to a fixed base for the winter. I move them weekly around the garden, but because it's so wet and muddy, I'm thinking...
