Male or female???

Hi!
Recently I've noticed two of my coturnix quails that are in together acting quite strangely. I have heard them both crow, so I thought they were males. There is one pharaoh, which crows constantly and has a pale chest, then one tibetan, which corws, but never when it's close to the 2nd one. I then saw the tibetan trying to mate the pharaoh. So I'm wondering...what is going on here??? Are they both male? One male and one female?

how interesting - I would think the crowing pharaoh is definitely male, and of course an egg from the other one would be a clincher but evidently that's not happening at the moment. How old are they? Is it possible to do the squeeze test on them, to see if any foam balls are being formed?

They're both a bit younger than two months old, no eggs, and foam in their poop. That would suggest they're both males...Maybe because they've been in together their whole lives their 'instinct' is to mate with anything?

Every male Coturnix has he strong urge to mate with anything, irrespective of gender, especially the horny adolescent boys! Both cocks, I expect. They may be OK together over the dark days in the absence of females to fight over, and if they're being kept in less than 14 hours of supplemented artificial light, they'll probably calm down and be OK until the Spring, when you may have trouble unless they're separated!
