Hi,

Well what a lovely show it was yesterday. Lots of worthy entries and droves of people milling around. Spent most of my time trying to make the decision whether to have some "bantam brahmas" from the sale pens, but as soon as I caught site of the Belgium D'Anver in the show my heart melted so I reckon my 2 new girls will have to Belgiums.

I did take a lot of photos, in fact 136. Sadly my new camera phone is pretty rubbish- had no idea until I uploaded them onto my pc, so disappointed. Wasn't going to put them on here, but at least you can make out the breed type if not the colouring etc.

It amazes me just how much you learn from chatting to chicken keepers at these shows. A great day out even though I came home empty handed but not through lack of trying..... Sadly didn;t get to meet anyone from on here.
Did anyone go?
Blue- did you manage to go?

HI Claire,

You are no the only one- I was hovering around the sales section for so long, keep going back to look at the brahmas- it took all my strength to walk away. They were lovely, there were four hens and a cock. I even asked a judge to give them the once over- they were from show stock. Someone had the cockeral and then I felt I couldn't have two and leave the other one hen on her own. It was a right dilemma. However, I must have made the right decision because after driving home, I embraced my girls and have not had a single regret.

My girls have had lots of cuddles today....... oh and one has started laying, so we've had our first egg since autumn. :)08

Hiya
yes... we went early - in fact they wouldnt let us in til 11 because of the judging!

I'll load up some of my photos too.
I bought the trio of Rhode Island Reds, and collected some contact numbers to purchase some more Derbyshire Redcaps in the spring.

the brahmas were lovely, I think they were sold when I got round there ?!

I'm afraid I can't say which birds won which prize - thats not what I went for! but there were some stunners & it was busy ...

The Brahmas are lovely but I think even the bantams are quite big. A garden centre near where I live has a pets corner with L/F Brahmas and they are gorgeous, the cockeral was the biggest chicken I have ever seen

Was a good show :D

I probably saw you - I was probably by the Wyandottes or sales, wearing a blue fleece with chickens on the front and back
A friend of mine was after the brahma bantams too! ;) One friend bought the 3 Silkie X Sussex's and 2 bantam Welsummers :)

Didn't show at this one but a few friends did - eggs and chickens.
Very proud of friend who got Best Welsummer and Best Soft Feather Heavy Bantam :D

The lights completely messed with my camera too and they came out all yellow like yours did

Hi Elmwood. Lovely show pictures. I think the duck is a silver appleyard? Could be wrong. I was particularly happy about the white pekin best true bantam. She is my sort of pekin! a triangle and a semicircle! No horrible flat back. That is surely a different breed? I marvel at how much standards differ. I suppose you have to ask who is judging and put your birds in the show that has the judge that likes your type?

Not sure what sort of pekins you've got but what you describe is exactly what a pekin should not look like.

They should be totally round, no marked division between back and tail, just a round ball shape. You should not be able to see daylight through their legs, and the legs and feet should be well feathered, with just the toes and toe feathers showing under the belly feathers.

Theres no need to marvel at how the standards differ. They don't. There's one standard and thats set out in the British Poultry Standards for Pekin Bantams. Any other shaped pekin is not acceptable.

As for judges, not all judges are well versed with all breeds, so this explains why such bad examples of any breed get placed in shows. It's not usually because the judge prefers you're birds shape, it's because he knows nothing of the standard.

To see some really bad examples of pekins, you only have to look on Ebay. Triangular, humped backed, long legged, obvious orpington blood, silly little round pom pom tails, in a range of non standard colours.

I dont want to offend animartco, but your type of pekin is a reject! Typical of all the pekin faults in one bird.

The duck is a miniature silver appleyard.
