I have tried to reason with her and kicked her off the nest 3 times in 3 days  , stolen her eggs  lol but again shes back in the nest box with another egg, so ive given up  , the incy is full of duck eggs, so i've tucked the other eggs back under her, given her corn and water and left her to it, i may move her to a box in the shed tomorrow if i feel its too cold.
why oh why does she think its ok to be broody during the coldest spell we have had in years :|

It's supposed to be summer here in NZ, but the weather is more like late autumn at the moment - not much sun. My pekins are broody on and off all the time. They will lay a few eggs, then go broody, so I stick them in another hutch on their own until they come right and then have to repeat the process a week later. If I leave them in the main chook house, they will steal other eggs to sit on and the eggs can get dirty etc. And then there are fights and loud clucking because a broody is sitting in someone else's favourite laying spot. I can't win!

I'm looking forward to spring when my pekin ladies might decide to go broody- and I'll be on a mission for hatching eggs :) I have two massive white orpington pullets too so I have a feeling I'll run out of space for mums and chicks  Thank goodness the legbars and polands aren't known for their mothering skills!

I have a broody pekin now too! - got a full incubator so I'm going to buy a few hatching eggs for her to try - bless her, she's only 27 weeks old- very young mum :D

I shouldn't have teased you- I have 8 pekin pullets- guaranteed they'll all go broody now :D How many eggs do you think a pekin would be alright with? Would 6 large fowl eggs be ok or shall I stick to 6 bantie eggs?

hi Pebojuno,
personally,I'd try her on an odd number of eggs,it makes a more secure circle for her to sit, less likely to dislodge an egg when getting off etc.As to egg size, some banties lay eggs as big or nearly as big as large fowl,so I don't think it would hurt.Or,you could try her with quail eggs, pekins are good broodies for any eggs so get eggs of a breed that you want if they all hatch.

I personally would give her around 6-8 bantam eggs to sit on

Thanks, will have a look around to see what bantam eggs I can get hold of- ideally pekins :)
