New Exbatts

The delayed rehoming for the exbatts went ahead yesterday and we took 4 of them. We may have taken more, but the rehoming started at 2.30 and we had an hour to travel to get there so we arrived on the dot so we could get them back to their run before it got dark. So many squirrel holes on the way up to our chickens now, that it's a hazard in daylight let alone nighttime. The are cage hens so in a bit of a state, but very feisty little birds nonetheless, Mrs Dinosaw received a drop kicking off one of them this morning!. Hopefully they won't suffer too much in this weather. The fourth one was hiding so I couldn't get a photo this morning. Oh yes, nearly forgot, 4 eggs waiting for us from them this morning too!!.

Well done Dinosaw. Good for you...

I was hoping to get some this month, but I guess that the people who were due to rehome last month will get their hens this month, & I'll have to decide next month how I feel about adopting during the bird flu lockdown.

Keep us posted as to how your girls settle in.

Leg weakness is the main problem at the moment, as you can probably see from that top photo, they have virtually no muscle in their legs. Also, as you would imagine, their new world is a bit too big for them at the moment. Hopefully I will be able to bring them through the winter and show you some happy, fully feathered birds in the spring.

I was wondering how your Ex Batts were doing @dinosaw?

Doing well Shardrach, thanks for asking. They have come out of their shell now and are starting show their personalities. They are also feathering up nicely which is just as well given the weather. Mind you, they are still all huddling together at night in that tiny nest box which was designed for bantams.

In this weather, growing some new 'undies' first is a smart move! They are looking really well on the mend, and wisely off lay for a while?
