I’m old. Therefore Ive tried every feeder there is. Thought I’d finally struck gold with Grandpas feeder. Starlings have learnt that if they sit on the treadle as a group they can open it and eat all the pellets. Surely it’s not rocket science. I’m getting to the point that I’m going to stop free access feeding and feed them twice a day. Any suggestions?

How many starlings does it take?

I am now visualizing a line of starlings jumping on it, one by one until they go "bingo, 10 is the amount we need" or however many it takes

If the starlings on Fetlar are that clever, thank heavens you don't have grey squirrels, Hen-Gen!!

You could try gluing a weight onto the lifting lid. But you'll need to check that your lightest hen can still open the feeder, of course. If the mass of starlings needed to counterbalance the weight is more than can fit on the treadle plate, that should solve the problem. Until the starlings start a joint operation with the bonksies, of course...
