Just noticed one of my hens has slowed down a little...sits down, goes quiet ...and het comb and face are looking a little yellowish in colour. Took her to the vet this morning but vet has no idea and gave her a general antibiotic. Anyone got any ideas what this might be?

Hi, is she thin? have you checked for red mite/lice? they can make them thin and pale looking-check your coop as redmite are only on the birds at night- during the day they hide in the cracks and crevices- lice will be on the bird all the time, check under and around her vent- but if she has been to the vets - they should have picked them up- also, what are you feeding them?
regards, David :)

she looks very healthy.
We've had red mites but now spray the coop at every weeks' cleanout and seem to be on top of it - will give a thorough check over tho.
Feed is a mix of corn and layers pellets - plus garden foraging.

Hi David
It's "mixed corn" feed a mixture of corn and maize. Mix is usually about 50/50 each day

ok, thanks i'll give it a try and let you know the outcome

You might want to mix a little poultry spice into their feed as a boost, contains lots of essential minerals. Consider garlic and ACV in their water. If she is a little run down and you have redmite that would be enough to drag her down.

We've got to the bottom of it......it's red mites, loads of em. Have sprayed coop every day (moved chickens out) but they still keep appearing. Have now coated coop in a powder that a neighbour recommends. Sprayed chickens too and the sickly one is definately on the mend, much better now. How long does it take to get rid of mites - i presume they are in the soil and everywhere after a bad attack?

Hi Steve, glad you found out what it was. Redmite are normally brought in on wild birds-and in his hot weather it is always worse- they breed like mad. You need to check all the cracks and crevices in your coop, take out the perches as well and look underneath them-they only go on the bird at night- during the day they hide in the wood work- then spray the coop and do it every week until no signs of mites. They can kill a bird in a few days/week if enough of them- drain the blood from them and make them very weak :) powder all your birds and check your coop regularly. hope you get rid of them soon :)
regards, David :)
