Hi, as a new chicken keeper, this summer I hatched some purchased Wyandotte eggs, blue laced , hoping for blue laced chicks. On hatching I have a buff laced hen, a buff laced cockerel and a golden laced cockerel. I wish to try again next year should I keep the golden or the buff laced cockerel ( I also have a golden laced hen I bought. All of them are suppose to be from show stock) In order for a better chance of blue laced chicks. Can anyone give me advise please. :)

Hi, welcome to the forum :D :-)99 :-)99 :-)99
This has a lot to do with the genetics, but unfortunately blue dont breed true, so breeding them is a real gramble, i dont think there is any way to predict the outcome exactly unless you know the birds exact genotypes.
take a look at the quotes below;
Wyandottes- breeding with blue

Recently I have been experimenting with blue in my laced wyandottes. It is a fairly easy way to add a bit of variety and experiment with a new colour, without having to get all new stock. When I refer to blue, I am talking about the lacing colour; eg blue takes the place of the colour black. I will also mention the colour 'splash' which is simply a very light version of blue, appearing almost white. (see a picture of 'Mr Splash' below).

For the purpose of this explanation, I will refer to the Black gene as bl, and the Blue gene as Bl (as it is dominant). each bird has two allels of the gene at the lacing colour locus; one from each of its parents. They then pass either of these genes on to their offspring.

A regular wyandotte with black lacing will be: bl/bl
A wyandotte with blue lacing will be: Bl/bl
A wyandotte with splash lacing will be Bl/Bl

Blue X Blue (Bl/Bl x Bl/Bl). This will give you 25% black (bl/bl) 50% blue (Bl/bl) and 25% splash (Bl/Bl).

Black X Blue (bl/bl x Bl/bl). This will give you 50% black (bl/bl) and 50% blue (Bl/bl).

Black X Splash (bl/bl x Bl/Bl). This will give you 100% blue (Bl/bl).

Blue X Splash (Bl/bl x Bl/Bl). This will give you 50% blue (Bl/bl) and 50% splash (Bl/Bl).

Splash X Splash (Bl/Bl). This will give you 100% splash (Bl/Bl).

The buff and gold are the throwbacks. Those colours used to create the blue. They occur 25% buff, 25% gold and the remainder blue, which is why blues are expensive I suppose. The buffs and golds produced are not breed standard but still lovely birds. We found that the buff cockerels looked a mess, with odd colours in their tails and on their necks, but the hens were OK - too dark though. The golds were really nice and we kept all the hens and one lovely, but ruthless, cockerel called Frankie (our guard dog). The blues were quite good but the best coloured turned cannibal and had to go. If I could turn back the clock I would have bred Golds as they are a very pretty bird.
