My 10 week old barred rock got a chunk taken out of the back of her neck this afternoon by either a mean squirrel of a bird of some sort. I have isolated her in the coop, as we have 2 RIR;s also. is there anything I can put on the back of her neck to keep the open wound for getting infected? We really love 'Pixie" and would hate to lose her. I am new to chicken raising and need any help available. thanks

--Oh dear! _ Its a matter of keeping it very clean , keeping flies etc off and stopping others pecking it . I would probably---keep her with just one other placid pal, clean it with dilute Hibiscrub , keep it protected by antiseptic wound powder or spray . The vets have a good gel one which forms a skin over to keep off flies etc. Id keep her in too --just to stop rolling in mud, rain, flies etc. As she is young I think any sign of infection she should see a vet ? antibiotics. Also needs vet if gaping/deep/bleeding wound. If you think she has been bitten by a squirrel or similar, she should probably have antibiotics from vet anyway as these carry so many bacteria in their mouths. __hope thats of some help! Ros

thanks, she seems somewhat better this morning... we put neosporin ointment on it last night before bed and kept her separated for the other 2 girls.... They were waiting at the door for her this morning. I did let her out into the run area with the other 2 and keeping a close eye on her . watching the others to keep them from pecking at her wound. I will keep a close eye on her today and probably isolate her again. with only 3 girls it is hard to let just one stay with her, the odd one out gets too lonely. thanks again, will keep you posted on Pixie's progress. Heading to the farm store later for some antiseptic spay.....

The Neosporin oint will be as good as/better than anything you will buy I think. Ros
