.facebook_719191041-1.jpgHi all! I'm new to all this & to cut a long story short I've bought 4 speckledy & 4 black rocks. I keep them at the in-laws as they have loads of hens. They have also got a cock that they hatched from a friend of a friend's eggs & I would like to know if anyone could identify it please? Also one of my speckledy has gone broody & I was wandering if there is a possibility that the cock & my girls cant mix?

He looks like a bit of everything to me Jason, so no particular breed. I would say a hybrid hen crossed with something colourful. But there are people on the forum who know far more than me about breeds, so wait and see what they say.

The presence of a cockerel can make hens broody, but they can go broody on their own as well. So they can mix quite happily. A cockerel will sort out petty squabbles that could leave a hen injured otherwise, so they can be benificial. They should also challenge intruders to protect 'his' hens. I think most people would have a cockerel with thjeir hens if it wasn't for the noise issue with neighbours.

I would agree with chrismahon, He appears to be a very handsome crossbreed! he may have a little Sussex, Sussex/hybrid, or even commercial Rhode hybrid blood about him, Males from the sex-linked RIR X RIW laying birds that breed the little red hens that fill our intensive systems, aren't usually quite as colourful as this, so I would say he's a Healthy and happy Mongrel!
There shouldnt be too much problem mixing your broody hen with the flock male, he'll assert himself, and no doubt she'll complain noisily, especially as she's broody! but as long as he has plenty of other hens to distract him, and theres plenty of space for everyone to get out of each others way if necessary, then I can't imagine any serious problems will arise.

Thank you both for your replies. I did have a look around online to see if I could find out what breed he was, I thought he was a mongrel but just wanted to be sure. Thanks

where are you located? that cockerel looks like one I gave to someone with a few pullets a year ago! If so it's a Maran(black feathers and speckles), Friesian(blue feet, red feathers), Sussex(heavy feathers, white feathers and gold speckles) cross :) Hope this helps.

Hi Bertie & the chooks. I'm in birsey which is in Orkney. He is a handsome fella whatever he is lol
