We moved to the country a couple months ago and the house came with a big flock of chickens. We are trying to figure out the breeds. They gave us a list of breeds but still not sure. I’ll post some pictures and would appreciate the help. In these three photos I believe are the same breed and my guess is Black Sex Link.

No particular breed I recognise Aidenous, but I haven't had that many different varieties. They all look very healthy though, although I would check their feet as some scales look raised- could be scaley leg mite? What colour egg do they lay?

hi Aidenous and welcome to the forum. What an intriguing puzzle! It would help if you could share more of the info that the previous owners left with you. To me, they don't look like any obvious breed, and there are so many hybrid types that it's hard to guess without more details. It looks as if the one in the third pic has a rose comb. Do you know why they kept so many? If it was mainly for eggs, they are probably hybrids. By 'a big flock,' how many exactly do you mean? Are there any cockerels which might have interbred, how many eggs are they laying a day ATM, and what colour(s) are they? You wouldn't expect many eggs in winter from hens older than 18 months-2 years, but all these factors will affect how to guess their ages. As Chris says, raised scales on legs may indicate older birds as scaley leg is a contagious mite infestation which develops with time unless treated.

More important for you, I would think, is how old they are, and any health issues, also the state and type of the housing you have inherited, which may turn out to have redmite infestation once the weather gets warmer, especially if wooden. It looks as if they're free range, - is there any boundary protection against foxes?
Looking forward to hearing more from you.... are these your first chickens?
