Hi, a few weeks ago I had an outbreak of mycoplasma, and I couldn't get tylan for a week but everyone seemed fine apart from my cockeral who got swollen eyes and a swollen wattle. After 2.5 weeks on tylan soluble everyone was fine even my rooster was much better no more nasal discharge or bubbly eye but the swelling under the eye and in the wattle still has not gone and it's been nearly two weeks since stopping the tylan. The swelling under the eye is nearly back to normal but the skin isn't smooth like the other side and the wattle is shorter than the other and slightly thicker (it kind of feels like there is fluid in there). Apart from that he fine but I would like the swelling to go away now as he is such a beautiful boy! Anyone any ideas if it will ever go on it's own or not? I have contemplated using a needle and syringe to try and draw the fluid out but not really sure? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated xx

Hello,

We would advise that you hold back from using a needle and syringe yourself as you may cause damage to the cockerel. If you feel that this is necessary it would be best to see a Vet for this procedure.

It is common for Mycoplasma to leave swelling of the sinuses after treatment however this is likely to go away over several months. If you are concerned you could always ask your vet to examine him.

We hope this helps.
Best Wishes,

Thanks so much, I presumed the swelling would go shortly after finishing the antibiotics. I shall leave him well alone an I'm sure the warmer weather will help with his swelling. It's looking a bit better today so I won't worry. On another note I have a 12 week old chick, she hurt her leg and couldn't get about much so I brought her in to make sure she's getting enough water and food. However she's gone really downhill and won't eat but drinks loads and her poo is like water with hardly any solids she's skinny too now due to not eating enough. She did get dehydrated a couple weeks back but recover within 24 hours. I really don't know what's wrong with her this time. I have checked for mites and checked her crop alls fine. No signs of infection of any sort. I am wondering if she's got kidneys problems or a blocked gizzard? I have managed to get some food in her today and given her some olive oil in case there's a blockage. She's really not happy and too weak to stand and she just sleeps. All her brothers and sisters are fine she's the only one we had problems with even at hatching. Thanks for answering my previous question though it's put my mind at rest. :-)

I had a bird with myco about a year ago - and he goes down with it every time he is stressed - when his "wife" does to a big show and so is away for the night or even two.. when the weather changes for the worse -(a common occurance when you live in scotland) :-)07 every excuse is a good one.. his eye is still not normal - but he is treading and fertile and he is happy..and I've got chicks from them this year - but this is maybe temporary - Are are you sure it's myco??.. strange poos - especially if they are bright green or excessivly watery might mean IB - that gives a lot of the same symptoms as myco (UR probems)- but also damages the liver and kidneys.. I'm lucky I live close to the "Dick vet" (university of edinburgh) vet school - and all poultry problems are heavily subsidised - so it doesn't cost much to find out what is really wrong with my birds .. If you can - find out what is really wrong with your bird - I hope it is good news - :) :-)17

Hi, thanks for the advice. My little hen did have myco when my roo did and had swollen sinuses they were all treated with tylan and all good since then. She is the only one sick at the moment an I have already given her a broad spectrum antibiotics which was started yesterday but she's just got worse today. Can't think of the antibs I gave her (it's French name anyway) it has got neomycin and penecillin in it so it should cover nearly everything. Because of her just getting worse I have sort of come to the conclusion mentioned in my previous thread. I live in France and although our vet is very good he doesn't specialise in poultry and I really don't want to spend more money on these birds as they have already cost me a bit in vet bills and medication. I dint think there's much more I can do for her or a vet really... My partner will be back tommorrow and if there's no improvement by friday morning i will get him to put her out of her misery as she is really unhappy and I don't want her to suffer. She was my favorite too :-( in future I won't have a favorite coz they always do this to you I have already been crying because deep down I know she probably won't make it. Thanks anyway we will see how she is tomorrow. X

Hello,

It seems you are having a fair share of problems with your chickens, we are sorry to hear this. Again the watery faeces will be due to her not eating properly.

The other possibility to consider for your 12 week old bird is Marek’s disease which sadly has no cure. Your existing birds could have also been infected however many will not go on to develop the disease. It is very difficult to diagnose problems without seeing the birds and especially where there are several symptoms all at the same time. What we would advise is that if your bird does take a turn for the worse it would be a very good idea to obtain a post mortem. If your local vet is not familiar with chicken post mortems then Chicken Vet could advise where to go. A correct diagnosis could save you and your birds a lot of heartache and expense in the future.

Keep up the good work with the TLC and hopefully your bird will improve or as you said if she seems to be in pain then maybe putting her to sleep is the kindest option but do consider the post mortem.

Hi, thought I would give you an update! Well on Wednesday she stopped eating and I had to gently force feed with rickets diet on Thursday she started eating again but very little. I had weighed her and she was 680 gram she lost over a 100 gram in 24 hours so her outlook was looking really grim. When my partner came back I said maybe we should let her go and he told me to wait another 24 hours. So today she has made in my eyes a significant improvement as she is eating a lot more and starting to drink less but still drinks a lot. I have weighed her tonight and the 100 gram has been put back on! So maybe she's on the road to recovery but I will not be convinced until I see much more improvement. Her poos have got more solid in them too. I forgot to mention that she was hatched from an egg which was laid when my chickens had a mycoplasma infection and being treated with baytril, so instead of throwing the eggs I incubated them. I understand that there are risks of having chicks that may have problems and not thrive (which I think is the case as her sister who is a week older is twice the size and doing really well). Unfortunately when I bought my chooks I didn't do my research doh! So when I got them home they came down with cold like symptoms (myco) but I didn't realize it was probably because they were sold to me as carriers. I blamed it on the dust from the hay which I didn't know at the time not to use it. So yes I have been a bit of an idiot but my nan kept chickens and never had any illnesses what so ever. Keeping chickens before doing my research has been a very steep learning curve and now I am aware of most common diseases and symptoms through lots of research and reading threads and advice from those with more experience. My last lot of chicks have been given tylan as it can be used as a cure and hopefully will be able to keep myco out of my flock or at least keep reoccurances to a minimum. The second infection I think was caused by stress as my dog got into the coop and although he would never hurt them they didt like it much! Sorry to go on but thought o would give you the bigger picture. The rest of my flock are still very well and been enjoying the beautiful weather! Thanks for all your advice and I will let you know if she continues to improve :-) x
