Hi, I have a number of new pol chickens who are just starting to lay, but my older birds are starting to slow down their laying as the weather is getting colder, will the new birds keep laying as they are just starting or will they wait till the weather warms up like the old birds

Hi
Sounds like your new girls have settled in well if they are laying already for you. You don;t mention what breed they are, if hybrids they should continue to lay but it all depends on the amount of daylight they have access to. Alot of the pure breeds don't lay in the winter months.
Just enjoy your fresh daily eggs whilst it lasts.

Hi, what breed is your chickens? if there are isa browns (ex batts) they will lay all year round, if they are small like a true bantam (pekin, sebright, dutch, rosecomb, sablepoot, belgian) they will only lay in the summer months and not in the winter months.
Hope this helps
Dan

So much for the rumour that pekins don't lay in winter - I had my first egg since about October today :-)08

My Pekins only stopped laying about 2 weeks ago. Its funny, I thought it was the pure breeds which lay intermittantly through winter and the hybrids that don't. :-)05
