Let the birds out of the enclosure today for the first time. I'll be here in the afternoon up until Friday evening so decided it was a good time to take the plunge. Pink hen, who was used to free ranging up at my friends, found her way after about an hour. I hadn't spotted Henny and Cocky outside so I went and encouraged them out. They have spent all day scratching around in the field. OH was concerned I wouldn't be able to get them back in, but he reckoned without their greed. They came running to the gate as soon as I got near it and then followed me back to the enclosure. Henny and Cocky followed me in but I had to entice Pink hen back in. She rushed through the gap in the fence as though at some time she'd had a shock off netting. Anyway they tucked themselves up about 20 minutes later, so it's out again tomorrow!

bet they enjoyed that :D :D i use a plastic milk bottle filled with mixed corn and shake that if i need to get the girls into another section of the run or out of one it works wonders ;)

We used a green scoop with grain in which we rattled. Eventually they came running even if they saw the green scoop -empty or full.

Mine come running as soon as I shake the very expensive dried mealworms packet from the RSPB.... Sounds like a greatly successful day. Always a pleasure watching the antics that go on when they are out, and the games of chase when someone finds a big grub in the spring grass :)

Two days of bitterly cold winds and and a sprinkling of snow this morning and they don't want to come out of the hen house, never mind out of the enclosure! We'll see what happens tomorrow.

Went to give them their treats at about 4.30 and Pink hen realised the fence was open. She decided the "open range" looked more fun and made her escape. I was able to watch her from the caravan - she was still out long after the other two had gone to bed, but she found her own way back in and joined the other two in the hen house.

must of been cold today mine went to bed when it was still light :-)07

Bitterly cold winds again today but both the girls are out. Cocky is all alone in the enclosure while the girls, not content with the 4 acre field have gone through the gate into the next field. They have just come back as Cocky has been crowing. At least it gives Henny a break from his attentions and they seem to be wandering about quite companionably together instead of Henny chasing Pink hen.

We let our oldies out into the new enclosure. 800 square metres and they spend most of their time just standing by the fence in one spot waiting for us to arrive with grain. They can see the house and the feed store from there.

Same thing today - both the girls out but \Cocky still in the enclosure, almost as if he's guarding the home!
