Hi all, my broody has hatched 8 chicks and I was wondering when I should start worming them. I currently use Verm-X every month for my older hens.

If your Verm X is new-ish, I'd read the label as it no longer claims to be a wormer !

Hi Dobby. Having used Verm-X and now stopped I would say at best it supresses worms but doesn't actually get rid of them. Easy to administer though but rather pricey for an ineffective product. I now only use Flubenvet every 4 months premixed in Marriages Layers pellets bought mail order in 10Kg bags. We used to Flubenvet every 6 months with Verm-X inbetween.

Think you should do your older hens now with premix and the chicks at about 20 weeks, when they start on layers pellets. You could do them earlier (12 weeks) and mix the Flubenvet powder to growers pellets.

The experienced breeder I got chicks from last year advised me along the lines Chris suggests. If they are being raised in clean conditions it's hard to see why they would need worming before 18-20 weeks, since the usual time for treating with Flubenvet is every 6 months anyway, in a flock which is regularly wormed. It's a good idea to worm all your birds, including the pullets, before they are integrated at POL and then they are all worm-free and in synch. with each other for future treatments. But as Chuck and Chris say, do use Flubenvet because Vermex is a herbal tonic, not an effective wormer.

Thank you, very helpful, you have just saved me asking my next question Flubenvet or Verm-x. One of my breeders advised Verm-x which I stuck to religiously every month but it was only on reading and trying to find the answer on when to worm chicks that I was wondering if it was enough.
