I was recently in a pet store where they had two week old Peking ducklings. I noticed they were out of water, so I asked the person behind the counter, "Would you mind if I got your ducks some more water. I noticed they were out." He abruptly responded, "No." I gave him "the eye" (you know, raised eyebrows), and then he said, "You will throw off my schedule. The ducks are too messy. I give them water every hour."

The poor things (at least 50 spread between three huge water troughs for cows) were very unkempt, bedraggled, just sorry looking creatures. I think the guy might be the manager, but really?! They are ducks. Ducks are messy. Most of the ducklings were not moving much, and there were a few who kept pecking at the water feeder. Anyone have recommendations? Thanks... oh, and no, I couldn't get them all. It wouldn't be allowed by city ordinances.

I would report him immediately to the USA equivalent of the RSPCA here in the UK. Make it clear that you know about ducklings and their needs, and stress that this is urgent.

Here's an update. I went in and spent some time in the store (just to check things out) and learned a few things. Number one, the store had problems with getting the ducks as scheduled. Second, there have been several cancelled orders (hence those still at the store). Third, several people have not picked up the ducks they ordered (even more at the store). Though I still don't agree with their reasoning for the lack of water, I understand their frustrations. I have a feeling they will change their ordering policies next year and have people pay at least half to ensure pickup.

I will go back to the store tomorrow, as I took a duckling home today, and show its progress... and maybe get it a friend? (My ducklings have decided they are too mature for the little one.) I think this will give me more leverage in discussing their policy and voicing for change before going more drastic. Besides, reporting won't change the present for these little guys. There just needs to be a change... NOW. If that doesn't work, yep, I believe reporting may be the next step. Thanks for the help.
