Now that my little flock is down to 3, I want a pair of new hens but I'm not sure whether to stick with Pekins or get something else, perhaps that lays a bit better. I have to say though that my chickens are pets first and the eggs are a bonus. I think I should have bantams as my hen house is not very big and they'll all be in together. What sort of hen is a good layer, hardy and has a friendly nature ?

Rhode Island Reds are always a great choice for Hardy, Friendly, Layers. If your looking more towards Bantam breeds, you could try Silkies or a pair of Cochin Hens :D I have all and I love em all!

I'd go with Sussex. More eggs but a good pure breed. Also Silkies have a few health problems and are maybe not ideal pets unless you have a bit more time and energy to put into them. They also go very broody and therefore, along with Pekins you could well be spending more time trying to break all your girls from this than getting eggs from them.

I'd thought of Sussex too, but there are about 20 Sussex of all colours in the field next to us and ours and theirs often wander round together. I'd never work out which were mine :) . Still not sure what to do, but it's fun looking up all the different breeds, I'll just have to go and meet a few somewhere I think. Trouble is I'll want to take them all home with me.

How about some bantam leghorns, hubby just got a trio of these, they are pretty hardy and lay quite a decent size egg for a bantam, not as cute as the pekins lol but i do love their floppy combs
