Hi there
I have been incubating a batch of 25 eggs-nearly all bantams but 6 Buff Orp LF. 21 Days have passed...I think it is day 22 for some and 23 for others. Only one of our own Buff Laced Wyandottes and one of the bought-in eggs (a Pekin) have hatched, No sign of pipping from any of the others. When should I give up hope?

Hello, have you candled them at all? to see if they are fertile? They should be at least pipping by now - you can candle them to see if they are full or infertile- then you will know.- if fertile give them another day or two- but they should have hatched by now- good luck, let us know how they go.
regards, David :)

Hi Nozzie,
They should have hatched by now but if they are fertile I would leave them a while- a while ago a lady collected some eggs from me (they were definitely fresh!) She had 1 hatch on day 21 and 3 a week later?!?! All 4 birds were perfectly healthy and she said she didn't assist any of them. I wouldn't help any hatch as if they are too weak to get out of the shell they wont be strong birds but there's no harm in leaving the incubator on for a few extra days!

Thanks for support! We didn't candle them-rather busy, but I know we should have done. This morning one of the Buff Orps has pipped...so perhaps all is not lost. Will candle them today anyway.

If the temp is a little low that can have an impact on hatching, also count the first day in the incy as day "0".

I'd not open the incy if one is actually hatching. Wait until its out before doing so.

Oh dear we've already done it. About 50% discarded. The one "pipping" seems OK so far.

The chick is dead. I feel quite despondant. :( We've had a bit of success with previous batches (1 Silkie, 2 New Hampshires, 3 Choc Orp banties 1 Poland. But this lot has been a disaster. Should I carry on? Am bidding on 4 new lots on eBay.

O dear, sorry to hear. Opening the incy may have contributed to its demise as it would have made the environment for hatching unstable. I'd always advise to candle earlier on and in the last days of incubating to not open the incubator at all to ensure it remains stable as possible.

With regard to bidding on Ebay, personally, its dodgy ground. Unless you know the seller to be reputable and breeding decent stock I'd advise against it and to buy privately from a local breeder you can visit and whose stock you can see. Or buy from someone on this forum who others have bought from in the past and have given good feedback on. I've bought eggs from people via the forum before and always had good hatching results. So I'm always happy to recommened sellers on here if I know their stock to be good or others have said so.

I can personally recommened this breeder. She sells her eggs via Ebay also but you don't have to bid. Just buy at the time

Her birds are well cared for and good examples of their breed. All what I consider good breeding stock. At the moment she would appear to not have hatching eggs but may have some in the near future. I'd drop her a line and enquire.

Also post in the eggs for sale/wanted section of the forum and see if anyone replies. You can then read round the forum to see if there is positive feedback.

We also have a list of 'good' Ebay sellers that members here can personally vouch for as being good fertility and stock etc. Although some of them may have only bought one batch of eggs but have had good results. Does not mean they have repeatedly bought eggs and had good hatches. But still, its good to know their first attempts were positive. Others have bought more than one batch.

I"d be wary of bidding on any eggs on Ebay as you really don't know what you are getting. If you are bidding on some rare colour or hard to come by breed, you may end up with poor quality birds or infertile eggs. It really is hit and miss.

Thanks very much! I have to say that all the Ebay sources have had 100% (ebay) feedback, eggs have arrived promptly , well packaged and labelled. However I'm sure it is better to obtain eggs from near home, where you can see the stock. I'll keep trying! Probably my incubator maintenance was at fault.
