Hi,
over the summer we hatched 6 sussex chicks. 1 light, 5 buff, but the 6th seems to be a cross between a silver and a buff.
She is about 4-5 months old.photo3.JPG
This is her mum

The pullet seems like a gold sussex but I thought that when you breed sussex's they always come out as one or the other, and don't mix.
Thanks for any help.

Hi Ed. Can't think why they would only come out as one or the other. To get the different colours originally someone had to breed two different colours together didn't they?. So I would expect them to be various shades from one parent to the other, just like the 6th. But I may be completely wrong and someone will tell me. There are some weird things happen when you breed chickens; Blue Laced Wyandottes throw back many generations to the original combination of Gold and Buff. Fair enough you may say but not at 25% of the hatch each, leaving just 50% Blues that you expected.

Can't answer your question, but I wouldn't mind a couple like her, she's gorgeous!

Would call her colour "gold birchen" basically her ground colour dominant black..and her hackle "gold" due to columbian gene restricting fully black in her hackle. Very pretty girl! :D

Yes a nice looking pullet. The colours do mix up when you breed some but not others. As Foxy says, Gold Birchen would describe the colour. What colours she would breed, would need you to experiment.

top one looks the spitting image of one of my black rocks, the silver sussex looks a lovely healthy bird too
