do chickens start to lay properly? mine are 17weeks old ive had them a couple of days now and had a total of 3 eggs, also are the eggs ok to eat at 1st?

also like to add what a good feeling it is when your hens lay them 1st eggs

Hmm yum... yes, those first few eggs are excellent! Yes you can eat them

It depends on the breed, how soon they start to lay - different breeds mature at different rates but in general 20- 21 weeks is about right.

Eggs will increase in size as they mature. This winter, when the daylight hours drop, you should get some eggs but normally they will moult and stop laying until spring as the daylight hours get too short.

I used to buy my egg layers in August so they would lay over the winter when my other hens had stopped but this only works for the first year.

they are rhode island reds, ive had 2 eggs yesterday and 1 egg today dont know which of the 3 is laying, ive eaten all 3 eggs for my T and they were good small but good
