Chicken keeping in rural central portugal is really widespread and you normally find that when you stay somewhere they will have at least 3-4 chickens however at the latest place I stayed at they had quite an unusual setup. They had built a large weld mesh aviary and in it were 24 Australorps including 4 cocks, a Poland cock, 4 guinea fowl, several ducks, 4 parakeets, half a dozen budgies, 4 doves and to top it off 2 black swans. I thought it was a real shame he had the swans in there as their pond wasn't nearly big enough but apart from that they all seemed to be rubbing along happily together with the budgies and parakeets feeding on the floor alongside the chickens. Don't know how much of a problem this sort of setup would cause with regards to disease but all the birds looked healthy enough apart from signs of overtreading on a few of the hens. Anyway can't say that I have seen anything like this before from a private owner, anyone else seen odd combinations of chickens and other birds?
