week old chicks

Hi, we currently have 3 orpington and 3 buff sussex chicks and as this is our first time at this just wondered about bedding for the brooder, they are all between 6 and 8 days old and at the moment i have them on newspaper covered in paper kitchen towels so they dont slip but am told that they can go onto wood shavings but am not sure when i can do this as dont want them to harm themselves from eating it. Thanks.

hi,

my chicks always go on wood shavings from day one. if you put their food in a bowl they should be okay x

Yes mine also go on wood shavings from day one, they do eat some, but come to no harm

Thankyou both for your replies, have now changed them onto wood shavings without any probs, they peck at them but are not actually eating it, they seem a lot more comfy/cosy now!!!!!!.
