There are masses of shows all over the country - show preparation is the same for every show - and it starts well before you start washing your birds - feed, housing and general care (worming, etc) are very important - you can wash and scrub a bird all you like - but it's your every day care leadinng up to washing that counts most - advice in preparation can be found here - lots of people show their birds and will be more than willing to help you out - also show catalogues are a minefield if you aren't used to entry forms - just shout - we'll all be there to give you a hand - as long as you post pikkis of your winners - what breed or breeds are you thinking of showing??

dorinda when your in the know the info is very easy to find,

as for me i can not find any info on any shows in the midlands but i am proberly looking the wrong way , its the same with you tube there is only one video of an american girl washing a chicken, which means to me that the whole showing seen is completely hidded in mystery and secretcy, keeping would be new showers out, i mean look at the the forum the is no showing section or in the stickies there is no information either,

so it does make me wonder that when you say ask for help i am now thinking red hot pokers and thunb screws to get the information out of you lot.

does any one know a good sorce of information on the net for showing birds and where shows are held or advertised

Can't help on shows, but have washed two roosters when they were covered in blood after fighting. I stood them (not together !!) in the bathroom sink in warmish water that went to the top of their legs, poured this over them with my hands, then washed them in gentle soap and rinsed off with clean water in the same way. I wrapped them in a towel when emptying and refilling the sink, took several goes as they were filthy but they didn't struggle at all, seemed to like it.

I dried them by holding them a comfortable distance from a fan heater, and they both went straight to sleep :)

Where abouts in the Midlands are you? - I'm in Birmingham :)
Maybe go to a few shows before entering to see how your birds compare etc, and then enter a couple of birds into a smaller local show (thats what I did) - I also entered photos and eggs just to have a couple more classes. I think I did well, with a few firsts but obviously that was only at small shows. Did get some Firsts at The National for egg and photo classes though :D
You will have to travel about but there are lots of shows, depends where you are.

I started showing last year and found everyone to be really helpful :D I'm lucky that I have friends who show so can ask them questions but have had help from 'strangers' with whether someone is good enough to show or not.
There is a Showing Section on the forum, don't know if you missed that.

With washing, what I do (might not be the best) is...
Wash them in the bath with the shower head on slowly, warm water. Use a mild Small Animal shampoo (Johnsons, for guinea pigs and rabbits) and then rinse them thoroughly. Wrap them in a towel for a bit to dry off and then keep them inside in a dog crate/hutch to dry overnight (I was told no hair dryers) - could have a heat lamp over them. I do them a few days before a show too, just to get their feathers back to looking nice and shiny :)

iwescott, i would love to join you at a show i am in north west brum, sandwell way and yes i had missed the showing section completely, do we know when the next show, big or small is

I'm in Sutton Coldfield so not too far!

Its not really show season atm (winter time really) so not too many poultry shows on but there are lots of Agricultural Shows on over the summer which some have poultry shows at.

The Three Counties Show in Malvern, 17-19th June may be a good one.
Entries closed on the 9th May so too late to enter but would be a good day out!

The small local show I entered was the "Four Counties Poultry Club" in Tamworth which was in December but they may have a summer show too, not sure yet.
Def make sure you go to The National in Stoneleigh, 19th + 20th November - best one I think :D

Will PM you :)
