Hi all,
a friend and i would like to start breeding our vorwerks. I have 2 hens and he has hens and a couple of cockerels, his are from the same brood.
Can we breed 'brother and sister' as it were?
Also can birds one generarion apart be bred together?
We were told that one of the hens i have was the mother of his chicks, although we are not convinced totally as mine only started laying a few weeks ago and their combs were very small when i first got them.
We both have hens that are more 'perfectly' marked than others and would like to try to continue that strain, perhaps with a view to showing a couple if all goes to plan.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
stu.

You can breed brother and sister. I'd only do so if both birds were good quality breeding stock. If the cock or hens are not of a decent quality I'd not breed from them. I'd look for a better cock bird or better hen, whichever is needed.

I'd not breed anymore back than that.

I've bred father to daughter a fair few times with good quality breeding stock. I've not bred back any chicks from those hatchings to the original cock bird or his daughters however.

I totally agree with snifter, you will be alright for one generation, but wouldn;t then breed them back again.

Thanks guys, useful and knowledgeable!!! (cant spell sorry! :( ) Will keep you posted on progress. :D

Yes agree, brother sister mating is sometimes needed or the only option - if they are not too inbred to start with you will be fine - see what the hatchability is like.
