Anybody else use this? I have been using this for several months now and have been most impressed. The has been a definate improvement in smell. I also find it warmer and softer to the touch than straw. Now all 6 of my girls try to squeeze into the nest box at night

I've never heard of it either but wouldn't want to encourage mine to sleep i the nest boxes.

Well done Lamb, and many thanks for introduction to Finacard! - looked it up, am going to ring them presently.
It sounds like the kind of bedding I have been looking for.
I am afraid also, that most of my girls snuggle down together in nest boxes, and lay their eggs when the boxes are conveniently empty during the day. Only it seems with my girls, does top hen get to perch. don't know if it is her rules or theirs!!
Hopefully I also will be a user of Finacard as soon as I can locate a stockist. It sounds great that 18kg converts to dozens of litres volume, which is what I want.

hi, Lamb, and welcome to the Forum. Like Valerie, I looked up Finacard (see http://www.finacard-uk.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=22&zenid=71g18obferqqtl6bbafjcd8gu7 ) and it does look a good alternative to the woodshavings many people use in their nestboxes. It would certainly be better than the straw you mention, as not only is straw less comfortable but the hollow stalks can harbour redmite. However, as others have remarked, I wouldn't be at all happy if my hens slept in the nestboxes, as I like the boxes to stay clean so the eggs don't get contaminated by overnight poo.

Interesting stuff, had a look on the website but does look rather expensive compared to other horse based beddings? I guess this depends on the volumes it is available in?

There are a good range of hemp-based, dust extracted products such as Aubiose, Easibed, Rapport and Bliss that work well as poultry bedding.

I like Aubiose as it is very soft, lasts a long time being very absorbent, and does compost down well. Rapport is lovely too if you can get hold of it! Most products work out at roughly between £7 and £10 per bale.

Perhaps you would like to introduce yourself and your chooks Lamb? We are a nosy bunch! :D

I've tried cardboard stuff before - it was a disaster to say the least! Firm believer in Rapport - I sometimes use Hemcore but am not happy with the fluffy bits it gives off when the chicks scratch around in it.

Hi,I have looked on the web site and as much as I like the Idea of a recycled product that would also rot down quickly.I think it sounds very expensive compaird to shavings £6.50 a bale and hay £4.00.
How big is 220 liters.

Graham.

I think so, too.

Hi,advert or not is it any good, is it expesive compaired to wood shavings.
I for one am glad to hear of new products, and diferent hands on opinions as to weather or not its any good.

Graham.

I use shredded card from.another supplier for my guinea pigs, and have used it in the nest box when I've run out of Aubiose. It's a huge bale for about 14£ delivered. It's dust extracted and clean. However it does attract the damp more than Aubiose...I prefer it, but only my humble opinion. I know others hate Aubiose!

Hi everyone. Thanks for the warm welcome :-)11 :-)07 I don't know were this has come from. I discoverd Finicard through using it for my other 17 rescued animals (rats, Mice, Gerbils and Hammie) I thought I would try it with my girls as it was so soft and it was an instant hit. I thought you guys would be interested

I don't mind my girls sleeping in the nest box. What ever makes my girls happy :D They are Ex-Batts so I feel that after what they have been through they deserve a little comfort. I know its more work for me but I don't mind. I clean the nest box out every morning before they lay any eggs so I don't have any worrys about contamination.

My name is Emma I don't work for Finicard I am a cleaning lady and spend all my spare time taking care of my 25 rescued animals including 6 Ex-Batts. I have been keeping hens for nearly 2 years. Sadly I have had to say goodbye to 5 :( I now can't imagine my life without them :D
