Urgent plea... Bantam cockerel needs a new home.

Hello there,

we are facing a difficult decision of letting our mini cockerel go as our neighbours set the council on us. He is about 10months old, very happy but quite noisy chap.

We would love to find him a place somewhere in countryside where he wouldn't bother anybody. We live on the outskirts of Exeter but I am willing to travel a bit if needed.

If you can help please please get in touch. He has to go this weekend / next week the latest. He would be handed to RSPCA otherwise.

Hmmmm bad news indeed. And you need to get rid of him so soon ?!

I have a second run that I could keep him in until we find him a home, maybe ? Before the eggs I am hatching are old enough to use it.... Or would he be able to be subservient to my Buff Orpington Cock (With carefull intergration) ?

I'm not far from Tavistock. If I can help, even temporarily, I will. But let us hope someone better suited comes forward. Orrrr ...... How about taking him to Hatherliegh market on a Tuesday before 10 AM. He's a beauty and would get you a few quid ?

He is living with another cockerel of his age at the moment - White Sussex who is a gentle giant.

The trouble is that Nugget (mini cockerel) is a kind of a hormonal teenager - he is a bit hyperactive and starts our Fricassee off (big one) every time. Nugget crows every time that an egg is laid (on average three times a day and very very loudly) plus usual competing for a territory.

They very occasionally chase each other around the garden but Nugget knows his place.

I know that Fricassee would be more settled on his own and I thought some breeder might be interested in Nugget. I don't know, maybe Fricassee will have to go at the end as well.

I had a chap from the council here today. He was nice and happy to help to sort things out but he made it clear that this can't go on much longer. What I don't want is to get neighbours completely pi***ed off as I really don't need this kind of problems.

Thanks for the info about the market - I will definitely consider it an option. We tried my son's schoolmate's family as well - they keep exactly the same breed as Nugget is and they live in the middle of the country.

My birds are on my allotement. A long way from being a problem. In fact... I'm on the Bere Peninsula. Can't get more "Country" than that.

iirc all cock birds start one another off . When I went to the market last tuesday it was deafening on occation If he's used to being with a Gentle giant and can get out of the way at need .............

Let's hope Nugget finds an "Ideal" home rather that just a loving one

Hello there,

I couldn't make it to the market on Tuesday, my son's schoolmate's family already has two cockerels and RSPCA wouldn't take him so Nugget is not with us any more

I miss him a lot, he had some kind of character in him but we couldn't bring his crowing down to a 'neighbour acceptable level' no matter what we tried :-(

Maybe one day we will have a little house in the country far away from primitive neighbours who believe that chickens belong strictly only on the farm.

I am sorry about Nugget, it is a shame that neighbours are tollerent to a yapping dog and not to the sound of a cockerel crowing
