I have read that Garlic & Citricidal is a good aid to chooks with the sneezes. Several of mine have started sneezing now, I think it could be the bad weather, so far I haven't seen any other signs that people mention, no runny eyes, noses etc. As far as I can hear no wheezing either. Eating as normal & carrying on in their usual daily routine. I don't want things to escalate though.

They have had their monthly ACV for a week in the water & a crushed garlic clove all the time but I don't think thats enough.Should it be much more garlic? Also has anyone used Citricidal for 'colds'?

I don't think its bad enough for anti-biotics but don't want to get to that stage if there's something I can do.

I'm sure someone will be able to help!! :geek:

Have you changed bedding recently? Plus if the birds are staying in the coop more they are more exposed to feather dander and scratching on the coop floor making for more dust.

Keep an eye on the very corner of the eyes - look for fluid very small bubbles. Also, put your ear on the chooks back and listen to her breathing for wheezing - if you get any of these signs, I would be thinking about Tylan or Baytril as a preventative measure.

You can increase the garlic if you like, it won't hurt - but I find it's a gradual, building the immune system up slowly, helping your chooks get what's called 'aquired immunity' to diseases.

Respite is something you could try but I think the biggest ingredient in that is Garlic anyway - I may be wrong though.

a few of mine were sneezing but not off their food and behaving normally and i rang the poultry vet and he said to give them multi vitamins for a week and see if theres any improvement

Could just be a cold - they do just get colds too...

I'm paranoid about Myco because it can strike so quickly and you do need to act fast to have a chance to stop it.

lol i must admit i thought the worst tim but the vet said not to worry yet and tbh they are all a bit better today

Hi girlracer -
A few of my chooks are still sneezing too, I've phoned the vet & he wants to see the worst one before prescribing anything. As none of them is that bad, I'm a bit reluctant to put them through this upset unless its absolutely necessary.
Your vet suggested Multi-vitamins, I would like to give this a go , but none of my farm-shops (where I buy the pellets) sell any sort of poultry health product. I have to go a 35/45 mins distance to get anything else which I can't do till next week. Any ideas where I could get some? I'm assuming you mean something likeTotal Solutions Liquid Tonic. I've also looked on-line but haven't found anything - I'm sure I'm just looking in the wrong places  but would like to get something sooner than this if poss.

Anyone got any ideas?

There are lots of tonics and vitamin suppliments available - I usually use Flyte so Fancy for bits and bobs like that - personally I keep 3 or 4 different types in the cupboard and alternate them a bit - but then I'm funny like that

Most of the time, I give the bare ingredients - the best thing you can give IMO are the natural things that are good for us too - raw garlic (packed with vitamin C) and fresh greens, for sneezes and so on, cod liver oil for bones, joints and feathers and ACV for the digestive system.

Most of the products you buy, like vitamin pills we can take are dried, processed and so on and I really think getting as raw-a-product as you can get to get these vitamins is the most natural way and the best.

One of the most important thing IMO when your chooks are ill with a cold etc is to stop them from picking up a secondary infection - in other words, when they are sick or stressed, they are more likely to pick up any disease that's passing - especially respiratory - taking them to the vets 'could' stress them and cause them to pick something worse than you started with.

Personally, I'd keep them draght free and fed well without the trip to the vet - because by now I would have expected Myco or worse to have got worse.

Hope this makes sense...

Thank Tim, as usual a mine of information :geek: !
I do give them crushed garlic & ACV in their water, cabbages & greens (for some reason they will not touch brocolli when my old lot loved it!) & a few other bits of fruit & veg when I've got some spare. I'll add the codliver oil & have the full set

Maybe I'm over reacting but I've had 2 go down with respitory infections, both recovered but if I can avoid trouble obviously it's the better way. I'm glad I had the right idea, more stress if I take her to the vet, I must be learning something :)

As always, thanks for the info.

Good luck - if it deteriorates then I would definately think about getting to a vets ASAP but lets hope it doesn't come to that...

oops sorry i only just saw this, i bought some bird multi vitamin from pets at home cos i couldn't get to the farm shop.
most of mine seem better now though a couple are still sneezing

Thanks GR & Tim. Ordered from Flytes so Fancy yesterday (didn't know they sold anything other than houses so thanks for that) I'll put them on the vitamins & hope that sorts it out.

Hi GR,
Glad your girls are better.
The ones of mine that were sneezing haven't completely stopped but as its gone on so long without getting any worse I'm sure its only a 'sneeze' & nothing else! I've been giving them all the added extra's suggested so I'm sure they're OK & no other signs of illness.
One of them (the Maran) every now & again has a funny little coughing sound (its like the horn on Noddy's car  ) I've come to the conclusion its just her 'noise'!
Its like being an over protective mother!!

One of mine had a cold,it started with a slightly bubbly eye, then a snotty beak and a cough.I added Respite to their water, along with garlic,ACV,tonic etc. Now,she has been completely clear for 2 days,I'm still adding the respite for a couple more days as I want to be sure it has definitely gone.
Roll on the summer,we had more snow yesterday, don't think the damp and cold weather helps,a bit of sun and a few dry days would chase the sniffles off completely.

Yep! Roll on the sunny days, more snow here today too ! Couldn't believe it when I saw the white ground ~ again! Poor chooks, just when you think its starting to get better back it comes!

We had more snow this week too.Yesterday, when I went out in the morning, my eggs had frozen, cracking the shells, dread to think how cold their house is despite the bedding.
Me and the chickens are sick of it,so,we're thinking of emigrating,to somewhere warm, dry and sunny :D . As the girls can't fly that far though,I thought of packing them in a car and taking over a Center Parc :D .

It does doesn't it,how long do you give respite for John.Somewhere I read 3 days, but,I give it all the time the chook is sneezy and then for an extra 2-3 days to make sure they are definitely clear.

I give respite to my birds when i seem them sneezing or couching. I normally give it for about a week 5-6days basically till the bird stops sneezing/coughing. Once the bird has stopped sneezing/coughing i normally give it some tonic additive like battles poultry drink etc. just to give it a bit of a boost with vitamins/minerals to help it recover. It does seem to help them back to good health ;)
