Hi. I have recently noticed a few mite/lice on my birds, I am certain they are not red mites they are smaller than a pin head in fact more like the point of a pin. I have read about the powders you can get for the birds and the solutions for the houses, but I also read about dipping your birds in a wet solution, unfortunately it did not say which solution, has anyone ever heard of this method or is just more pie in the sky as I can't seem to find any solution that can be applied directly to the birds, just powders

We use the louse and mite powder which doesn't kill them it just discourages them from being there. Occasionally use a mild local (Johnsons cat treatment -pyrethum?) spray which kills on contact. Can't use anything stronger directly on the birds without risk and egg withdrawal (Frontline spray). The powders are very effective on the birds but no good in the coops -we've found red mite hiding in piles of mite powder in the corners. Can't imagine anything you dip them in as they will immediately preen and digest the stuff.

I think a dip really is justr a pie in the sky, perhaps several!!!!!
I use louse powder from barrier health care which can be applied to the birds and the coop and kills them by removing their waxy coating and dehydrating them. Slow, but eventually effective

I am a little concerned by your description, the common poultry louse or flea as they are sometimes called are like either dark, or brown, sesame seeds that dart around the base of the feathers and usually you can see what looks like icing sugar (louse eggs) stuck around the vent feathers.
What you are describing maybe Northern Fowl mite...which are much smaller, like little black dots. These are far more dibilating for a chook and are characterised by a more greasy look to the feathers. Scabs also form around colonies usually around the vent in serious cases.
A good wash in medicated shampoo plus an application of either Johnsons louse spray (for birds) or Frontline for cats (the drops) are very effective, however note not liscensed for poultry.

Thanks everybody for your help, birds and cages have been powdered in the meantime I will keep you posted. Cheers
