Hi,

I just wondered whethered you'd like to share the best bit of advice you received as a newbie?

Mine was to raise the food and drink off the floor, and preferably have them hanging. This keeps them a lot cleaner.

Anyone like to add?

Lock up your chickens EVERY night without fail.

You may think there is little chance of a fox passing by but they drop by almost every night, doing the rounds and the one night there is an opportunity....

Me too just been out and put the girls to bed!

My best piece of advice so far is to give the girls a treat of mixed grain to help get them where you want them. So i can now get the girls back to their run/coop now without an ounce of problems! :D

Went and bought a bag today from town after what everyone was saying about it and everything is true they love it.

Only gave them a couple of tablespoons between the four of them, is this okay everyday?

A handful per hen in the late afternoon is a reasonable amount. Too much and they get fat and don't get the correct balanced diet.

There are some specialist 'treat foods' I'm looking into at the moment - and these really make the girls go mad! Just the smell of this stuff makes me want to try it! I would describe it as the caviar of chicken corns!

I will post a link up soon when I have figured out the best place to get this as it's made in Holland...

Sounds good Tim, let me know when you get the info. paranoid about giving them too much but what i have given them so far is about 1/4 of that so i haven't over done it.

Just off back into the garden to let the girls out again now the rain shower has passed.

Sorry, I don't want to hi-jack this post - but have a look at the Garvo Website which has the range of food they produce. They are a dutch producer - but have quite a reasonable distribution network across the UK.

Check out their Chicken Treats...they are yum!

Handle your birds as much as you can, so that if you ever need to medicate them they won't get stressed.

I have kept chickens for around 50 years off and on and the best piece of advice I can give is.

Never overcrowd your birds.

As a newbie, the best thing I have learnt are: -

Spend time with your chucks, this way you can build up a relationship and also spot any problems early
Always lock them up EVERY night
First sign of illness...ACT
Give lots of cuddles! :D

Gosh, can't think which piece of advice I had when I was a newbie was the best because I didn't get much & bumbled along valiantly wishing I knew someone who could give me some. Then of course I found this fabulous site!

But the one piece I wished someone had told me was to be very, very vigilant about your chooks, morning, noon & night:-
 "watch out, there's a fox about!"
