Our Bluebell, Izzie, got out yesterday through a part of the fence blown down in the storms. We couldn't catch her but she seemed quite happy grazing in our back garden so we left her to it. Later our distraught neighbour came banging the door - his wee dog had attacked the hen and she looked quite poorly. OH got her into the wire cat basket and took her to the emergency vet. Forty-five minutes and 25 stitches later Izzie looked quite a bit better and the prognosis is good. We have her in the utility room at the moment and she can go out in a couple of days.

Wow, that was a difficult one! And expensive, too, I bet. Children and animals always choose weekends or Bank Holidays to fall ill, don't they? So glad she's doing well, and has youth and strength on her side. 25 stitches! Picture, please!

And I hope that, when she's better, Izzie will be able to post in the Pets Diary thread, as an honorary forum member!

Oh poor Izzie, gosh that's a big gash for 25 stitches, looking forward to her diary entry. Hope she makes a full recovery

Thanks for the good wishes. We let her out today, her friends had been missing her. She was rather big for the cat basket so couldn't get a photo with her in there, maybe tomorrow. She actually laid this morning, bless her Also one from Morag (a huge 67 g) and a rare one from Skye.

We don't know the vet bill yet as she has to go back to have the stitches out in a couple of weeks - I don't suppose it'll be cheap though. Our neighbour has offered to pay it. They were thinking of getting hens but are having second thoughts now.

So pleased she is OK. Can't believe she laid an egg. Accept the neighbour's offer to pay the bill. If the dog came into your garden, they should pay. If your hen wandered into theirs, maybe go halves? Hope you resolve it, they seem like good people.

They keep sheep on the land around our house, the previous owner having sold it to them - he was their uncle. The sheep are out the back and Izzie was in the back garden. The wee dog was in the field with David and must have spotted Izzie, who is not usually there. Just an unforeseeable accident so we'll probably go halves.

I never did tell you how much the vet charged. It was £5 for stitching Izzie's wound and taking the stitches out again. When we queried this with the receptionist she said 'Yes, that's right, Hector likes doing things like that'. We were pleased that we'd given him a dozen eggs!
