We had too many cockerels and some of our poor hens were over 'used' which means they now have bald backs. The cockerels are now in the freezer or have been invited to dinner already. I am worried that our ladies may get sunburnt - is this a possibility? We live in Crete and the temperatures are increasing as we get more and more sunny days (yes I am bragging a little here). :D At the moment it is 30 degrees in the sun (still bragging). :-)08 I could spray them with some sun lotion to give them some protection - is this necessary?

Hi Carolyn,

Yes, they can get sunburn. Poultry saddles can protect hens from this as well as protect them from treading. Some people put sunscreen on ex-battery hens, others try to provide lots of shade for their birds so they can stay out of the sun. If they free range then the last option is difficult unless you can house them under trees / in a wood.
