suitable types of sawdust to use as bedding

Hello everyone,
Just joined the forum a few minutes ago. I live out in the countryside a few miles from Edinburgh in Scotland, and my wife and I have 7 hens which keeps us supplied with eggs for our own use.
We have only kept poultry for a year or so, and have come to realise, more and more as time goes on, how lacking in knowledge we both are as far as keeping poultry is concerned.
My question today: we ran out of bedding and were offered, at no cost, spruce sawdust. It's always interesting to be offered things for free, but are there any reasons why using this as bedding would be a bad idea?
Thanking any of you helpful people in advance for you advice.

All the best, Andrew

Hello and welcome :)
If it's not too dusty- then it shouldn't be a problem- most people use shavings but some use sawdust- you just need to be careful about the dust that's all- it can cause respitory problems- should smell nice though!
regards, David :)
