i am looking at getting 1 more house for the new run and i was thinknig of converting a kennel would this be ok its within my price range . it wont get wet as it will be in a roofed run :D so i can change the roof on it anyway to onduline .http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DOG-KENNEL-EXTRA-LARGE-SLOPED-ROOF-KENNELS-DOG-HOUSE-PET-PUPPY-XL-OPENING-ROOF-/230804014548?pt=UK_Pet_Supplies_Dogs&var=&hash=item7b6c92ffaa

We converted a dog kennel Karminski. Bit of a pain cleaning it out and no room for a nest box. But it was only a Winter home for the bantams and a home for our pet cock Bottom when he was little.

It looks OK if you had a dog, but I don't see the point of getting it for chickens when you would have to do so much modification, buy or make nest boxes, perches, pop hole etc. Which size would you get? The two smallest ones are quite tiny.
If someone gave you one of these for free or very cheap, it might be worth it, but I would think that , by the time you had finished adapting this, you would have spent enough to have paid for a house designed for chickens.

i dont spend unless i have to i'm more the recylcing tpye only need to add 1 nest box { got that already } and 1 perch as its only for 6 little bantams so i would get the large size one already measured up :D . i have brought other chicken coops and ended up taking most of them apart and kinda remaking them as i find them pretty stupid especailly the size of the nest boxes if they come with ones that are attached and most perches are to small in coops that i have seen but i dont have a few hundred quid to buy something proper wish i did though , the banties couyld have this and if i move the favs in there as well then they can have the coop the banties are in now as they used to have it anyway  .

this one the lid lifts up its pretty much the same as the coop i brought a couple of years ago its a great coop if it never gets wet :D

With a lot of these types, the photos are very good at flattering the design, the size and the quality of the wood which is so soft that a rat can chew through overnight. Some have no ventilation at all when the doors are closed and most are imported from the East. Many people buy them only to realise when they get their chickens, that they are severely flawed and don't really meet the needs of the hens. I have a few around which are useful for rearing a few chicks after I put ventilation in but are not much use for anything else. I picked them up second hand for that purpose.

I suspect that many of these would be returned on opening but new owners need them straight away and to avoid the hassle of returning them.

I think the kennel on offer karminski, is one where the photo may flatter and I suspect the quality of the wood is poor.

am going to my local avairy centre later will see what they have but they are pricey may end up building my own again or just tidying up what i have one of the houses is pretty big and i ddint really want to put that in there but now its drying up i can stay out there and have a good look , but with what i ever i get it should last as it wont be getting wet .

Just to add to Chuck's comments about wood quality. Not only is it soft it is also so porous that even several coats of Cuprinol Shades won't seal it. This becomes a real problem when washing it out. The wood expands so much as well, just from changes in air humidity. Wouldn't last a week over here as the ambient humidity can go from 90% to 20% in a day. Even our coops are suffering and they have been treated inside with creosote, are pressure treated anyway and have two coats of Cuprinol outside.

Try your builder's merchants as well Karminski - one of ours sells a small good quality chicken house. I'm going to the local timber merchant/sawmill tomorrow to look at the ones they make. I know their stuff is good quality but it is quite expensive. I know you're inot recycling so you could also look on ebay or preloved for a childrebs playhouse as they are often very good quality.

well i dont think i will be buying one as i have been offered something very similar to this for £100 http://www.waltons.co.uk/waltons-snowdrop-cottage-with-loft-7x5 the big girls can have this as it will be way to large to put in with the banties in thier run as its only 12ft by 12 wheres as the big girls run is a lot bigger :D going to go look at it next weekend and it sounds almost brand new but of course i'll have to sort out the roof , so i think for the banties they will just have to make do with what they have for now .

That's a real bargain Karminski. I've seen this sort of thing in a place near to our house in the UK but never made the connection of 'possible coop conversion'. Looks ideal with plenty of light inside.

i had one before and was totally gutted about getting the red mite in it which is why i got rid of it but i have leant my lesson since then and if i play my cards right i can convert it into 2 coops by just splitting it down the middle , my girls adored the top layer on the last one not 1 bird roosted in the lower levels  it will have to have an onduilne roofing added but thats not a prob cant wait to go see it :D :D then my other houses are be retreated etc and used for the bantams once we get the right weather that is .
