Strange Duck Habit?

Hello All. I was looking for a forum for domestic ducks, and here you are.

I have two Pekin ducks and one Muscovy. They are my pets, I love them very much, and they will never be meat! I just got them in March of this year. I have an aviary with bunnies in one side and the ducks in the other side. They are seperated by a fence, but it's nicely fenced over the top, so it's very safe. Thanks to the previous owner of this property!

For now, I have a kiddie pool in their enclosure, it's a larger one, but I'm planning to build them a pond and a new enclosure to give them more space. My husband and I sit and watch them often and they are so much fun. We did notice a strange behavior and I looked online but could find nothing about it.

When the ground is wet around their pool, they sort of lap the water and mud and deposit it into the pool. Or maybe they are drinking water from the pool. They open and close their beaks so fast constantly while doing this and they make lots of smacking sounds. I was thinking they are picking up bugs out of the mud, but then I noticed they do it while they're in the pool, not with mud, but with just the water. What the heck are they doing?

Thinking back, I remember them doing this in their water dish when they were younger, before they had their pool. Thanks for any comments/answers.

I hardly know anything about ducks, :-)11 I have never kept them, :-)11 but I have observed this behavior before :-)05 :-)05 . I have seen ducks doing this in the water, and also lapping up pondweed. I dont know exactly what theyre doing, as I said, im more a chicken person, but I think the behavior is nothing to worry about (as I said though, dont listen to me!!) :-)08 :-)08 :-)08
