Spring has Sprung

March 21st brings warm spring rain. Incubators are full of eggs, lambing starts one month from today. Geese should depart for Iceland any day now. Starlings are noisy. Ravens should be well on with their breeding. All is well with the world.

Meanwhile, we've had two bouts of heavy snow, ice and frost, but the daffodils and primroses are all in full bloom, regardless! Between the snow & ice, we had torrential rain, so the ground is completely saturated, so now that the snow is gone (for now. Some forecasters say we will get another belt of it over Easter), farmers and gardeners are frustrated, because the ground is too wet to get in on and work. In fact, on my way home yesterday afternoon, I saw what I thought must be an accident. A group of people clustered around a car at the side of a road. Not an accident though. A taxi had pulled off the narrow road, onto the wide grass margin, and the front of the car had sunk to it's bumper in the mud! The people were trying to push it out! Good luck with that!

Every Spring, there's one particular field where I look forward to seeing the sheep with their lambs. It always means Spring has really arrived. This year though, the ground is too wet, so there are no animals out.

Sunny but cold here. Chiffchaff started calling this morning, and our overwintering Firecrest seems to have departed. Rookery very busy now they have settled down to breeding
Our neighbour starts lambing next week. Calves all born.
