Hi,
I've just bought a Light Sussex bantam and noticed that when some of the muck came off her legs they are bloody and a bit cracked.
What should I do?

Also, I presume I need to worm my birds every so often. Is there a more 'natural' way of doing it other than chemicals - ther'es nothing like producing your own food to make you realise that you get out what you put in.

Thanks.
Liz

Re legs--could be scaley mite , you can treat with a no. of 'chemicals' but if they are sore a liberal rubbing with liquid paraffin/vaseline or similar alternate days will soon smother them if it is mites and generally soften/lubricate the skin. Re worms-there are numerous 'natural ' wormers available , I may well be wrong but I doubt there are any clinical studies to show they do anything at all! If you are paying out for something you might as well get something that is shown to work. Good luck, Ros

Hi Liz, Fluvenet is the only licensed wormer for poulrty- very good- as for her legs i wouldn't use liquid parrafin if very sore- either vaseline or normal cooking oil- (just dip the legs in ) it only needs something to smother the mites- you will not see improvement until they next moult their leg scales but repeat treatment weekly for a couple of weeks- sorry to hijack post!
regards, David :)

David, not at all - I'm a beginner and need all the help and advice I can get!

I've just been looking at scaly legs on the internet and mine don't seem quite like them - could it be that my girl has only just picked them up?

Liz

hi, they look worse the longer they have it- in serious cases they can lose toes- it will heal but it takes time- i would dip their legs in cooking oil- no harm done and only good from it- any clean oil- veg, sunflower, corn etc will do, good luck, regards, David :)

I've just tried to get a photo to post, but on second thoughts, I think it must be scal leg mite.
Also I now notice that she has one foot that isn't quite right - one of the toes hasn't formed properly and is only half as long as the others with no nail.
Will she be alright?
Liz

that will be from scaly leg- it probably dropped off some time ago- she will be fine but dip her legs once a week for a few weeks-
david :)

Keep a close eye on your other birds for leg mites in the coming few months. They may well get infected if it doesn't clear up fully.

Apple cider vinegar is a good natural wormer of sorts. Only use horse grade quality from feed merchants. Human grade stuff is too refined. 20ml in 1 litre of water every day for a week. Ensure they have no other water to drink from. Makes the gut inhospitable to worms etc and is a good natural preventative. Also grated carrot can be good.
