"No Name" my chicken is now 2 just over 2 years old and the past few weeks, as per another thread, there has been a few soft eggs. The last one left her quiet for a few days.
2 days ago she layed yet another soft egg along with what can only be described as something that has been shed from her insides.. blood, skin esque and they were all pecking at it - yuck...
I have been keeping a close eye on her since and she is staying in her house a lot and today on feeling her back end it is hard...... I have brought her in and sat her in a warm bath and given everything a gentle massage.. she is now in the infirmary (downstairs loo) any suggestions as to A: whats causing this and b: what she shed

Sounds like she has shed her ovaduct and she also has an internal abdominal infection. No more eggs and antibiotics needed to save her. We've been in the same position with our Blackrocks at two years old. They shed the entire ovaduct either because of infection or, as I think, they have just run out of eggs and no longer need it. They are a bird after all and weight is paramount. One went too fast to save -completely overwhelmed by a massive internal infection. Annie survived for 18 months -very happy she was too until she went the same way.

I think she has passed a lash, ie part of her intestines has come away. this is quite common especially in older hens, and not dangerous. If you google chickens + lash, you'll get quite a few results (once you get past the ones about S&M of course)
or this one which is a bit graphic, with pictures, don't look if squeamish, but it's very informative with some extra links
not surprised she laid a softie at the same time. You are doing all the right things for her, just TLC and see how she gets on. Is she an ex-batt? they are prone to this sort of thing, once they get beyond two, and there's not a lot you can do about it really.

Gross but exactly like it!! Made me heave all over again LOL! Yes she is an ex-batt ....
I will take her to the vet for a quick once over, just in case I am missing an infection as Chris says. Better to be safe than sorry. I've heard of lash but thought it looked more "sausage" like... there was a small amount of what looked like blood??
Will let you know what the vet says
@ Chris - what a time you are having!! Your poor TNN I will keep everything crossed for him sounds horrific.

Oh Marigold, thank you for posting those links!!!! I hope none of mine produce anything like that anytime soon!!!!!

My little girl found one in the nest box last year, pronounced it "gross" then wanted to disect it. " not today, my love" I trilled....then promptly binned it. I suppose I should have let her...she's quite the scientist:-?

We had a couple of 'lashes' as well. Looked like half of a small uncooked sausage. The shed ovaduct looks like a big egg covered in bloody flesh and inside it are egg yolks.
