Got the girls a couple weeks ago and they've settled in with no problems ..an egg a day so far from bluebell .
They taste so good as well and the yolks so much yellower than the shop bought free range eggs .Happy hens :-)

That's good news, lovely photo, it looks like you have found out what lovely personalities chickens have! :D

Yes they are all different and unique and this one is definitely the most friendliest I have ever met ..she comes running to see me each time and has fed out of my hand unlike the other 3 which are a bit wary ...had a first today ..a soft shelled egg ..I'm not sure which laid it as I have had an egg every day for over a week and now a soft shelled egg ..feed hasn't changed ..not sure if it's from one of the three which hasn't keg and egg yet as thus was in the sawdust and not up in the egg box as usual so could be one of the other three ..maybe just not eating enough grit with her food yet ...or do you get the occasionally soft shelled egg at times ???

Might be because they are living in a nice warm house Lornsy, looking at the photo. Just joking. Well done -chickens clearly respond to lots of affection.

You say

maybe just not eating enough grit with her food yet

it's oystershell she needs for eggshells - grit is instead of the teeth they don't have. Make sure you have "mixed grit" and if not, buy a tub of oystershell and put that out as well.

Wouldn't worry too much about it at the minute Lornsy, it's fairly usual to get soft shells in hybrids when they first start laying, sometimes the eggs just pop out overnight when they are perching not fully formed. See how you get on, I'm presuming your feeding layers and not growers in any case it never hurts to have some oyster shell in with the grit as they can take it or leave it as they need it. Nice pic btw :)

Yes they have oyster shell which looks like it has added grit in it ..also feed layers mash x. Had normal egg again yesterday so looks like a one off soft egg. :-)

Yes as Chris says, one or two softies are very common, as they are going through 'hen puberty' and it does take a little while for the hormonal balance to settle down.
