Hi everyone

last Monday I bought 3 Wynadottes one silkie and one lemon sablepoot, they are all in really good condition but when I got them home the sablepoot was sneezing quite a lot, she has no discharge no raspy breathing and in every other way her behaviour is normal. I started a course of Flubenvet last Friday and the sneezing is much better although she sneezes occasionally. none of the others are sneezing or showing any signs of ill health, do you think I can stop panicking now ? Is sneezing and opening beak with no other symptoms typical of gape worm? Also as the Flubernvet is introduced into the digestive system how does it enter the respiratory system and what happens to the dead gape worm ? Sorry this is so long. I have got other chickens which are x bats so am not a total beginner but still a novice ? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Is it possibly the bedding? maybe she's not used to the bedding or ground you have? If there's no discharge or congested chest sounds I wouldn't be too worried, especially if it's gotten better since you've had her. If there is no gurgling noise when you hold the bird you may just need to give another course of the Flubenvet. If it's gapeworm you can treat it easily with low grade infection with regular treatments (every 3wks). See how she gets on at the weekend when the course is complete and then worry. To answer your questions, Yes, coughing(not usually sneezing if gapeworm) and air gasping is normal for infestation, high infestations will have the gurgling in the chest as well. Flubenvet works the same way most medications work by entering the bloodstream through the gut or internal organs. then the drug is carried through the body to treat the areas of infestation. gape worm is usually found in the trachea(throat), and can be found in the lungs but generally are in the trachea. The dead worms will be passed in the faeces or coughed up this is why it's so important for you to clean out any poo or soiling during worming to keep from re-infesting your flock. Poo picking or disinfecting the ground after the 7day course is what we usually do. we leave half the run off limits and air out the used one while we clear and rest the other.
Hope this helps.

Traditionally you sprinkle lime onto the ground to 'sweeten' it. Nasty stuff though and need to keep birds well away until it has been completely washed in by the rain over several weeks.
Sounds like dusty bedding to me. We have never had a confirmed case of gapeworm, it was always a chest infection. The symptoms are similar. If she has been given ILT virus immunisation it can flare up in times of stress -like a new home or moulting. It first shows as sneezing then swelling around eyes, runny eyes and dificulty swallowing so loss of apetite. But if sneezing has reduced already I'll stick with the dusty bedding cause.

Hi

Thanks for your replies, I use dust extracted shavings and clean out every day and she was sneezing as soon as I got her out of the carrier so maybe the bedding in her previous coop was dusty and that is why she is getting better? Will carry on with the worming course and fingers crossed she will stop completely.

thanks again for your help.
