hi

has anyone used a smoke bomb to rib the coop of red mites, i read on one of the chicken forum of a person using the smoke bomb that you use in your greenhouse to get rid of bugs, she said that she sat the smoke bomb on some foil to protect the wooden coop and lit it shut the door and let the smoke get into all the crevices and after 2 hours opened up the door cleaned out the coop put clean bedding in and then its safe for the chickens to go back, she said that all the mites were gone.
has anyone used this method.

Hi Rita. I use a Sulphur candle to fumigate the greenhouse. It kills everything but stinks and takes a lot of ventilation to clear so haven't tried it on the chicken coops. Also it attacks metal (except aluminium). There is a product being sold now (advertised in PP) for fumigating coops but I am waiting for next months Practical Poultry which features a new invention for ridding the coops of mite claimed to be totally. I thought about this last year and was going to make a mite trap using warmed (to 38 degrees) fly paper so the mites go to the heat at night and get stuck on the paper. Problem I had was no mains electricity to the land where the coops are so have to use a big battery and inverter. Anyway, a home brewers heating mat (with built in thermostat) and some fly paper is what I had in mind.

have heard of smoke bombs being used, very stinky though, and takes ages to go awway, wouldnt use it in chicken coops.
