I've just been watching 12 lovely lively little tiny mallard ducklings buzzing around on the river, watched indulgently by proud Mum, hatched without incubator, heat lamp, or brooder, on a wet river bank with automatic humidity control, and finding their own food. Amazing!
It's a pity we don't get broods of wild chickens wandering around, the way the ducks do - here in Whitchurch, everything stops for the ducks to cross the road, they nest under the rhubarb leaves in the allotments, and the ultimate crime a few years ago was when somebody actually ran over a duck.....
