Hi. Wonder if you could help me. This morning I lost a chicken. It was fine yesterday but when I came to let them out this morning she looked very dozy and weak. I took her into the house and kept a eye on her. But after about twenty minutes she went into a fit and died. Anyone out there knows what may have happened.
All the best
Andy.

Sorry to hear this. A few more details would help, Andy. How old was she, what breed, was she eating and drinking, normal poos? Was her comb blue or purple when she had her fit? ( this could be a heart condition, chickens can get strokes or heart attacks, which come on suddenly.)

Thanks for replying Marigold. She was a white booted bantam about a year old. Day before she was eating and drinking fine. Poos normal and comb pink. My son told me that he saw her eat some honeysuckle berries a few days earlier, could this have caused it?
Thanks.
Andy.

Sorry you have lost your hen. :(

Rarely if ever will a chicken eats what is poisonous, they instinctively know what is good/bad in the garden.

I am afraid it is really difficult to diagnose without seeing the bird or doing a post mortem, anything offered would simply be a guess. If the problem is infectious then only time will tell. Sorry I know that is not much help...

I had a chicken that dropped off her perch one night for apparently no reason at all. I'll never know what killed her, so know how you feel. I'd say that if it was sudden and everyone else looks happy and healthy, she may have had a heart attack or something wrong inside, it is possible and more common than you think for then to die quickly and unexpectantly. Fingers crossed that all is well :)

Thank you for your comments. Yes all seems well at the moment. Looking more like a heart condition that she died of. Keeping a close eye on things. Thanks again.
All the best.
Andy.
