Can anyone help me i am new to this so hope you can help me i had six chicken in my garden. last weekend i found 1 chicken dead in the pen. i also have had to remove another chicken due to her pulling her feathers out by her vent and loosing clear liquid from there and a white discharge which when she cleans herself is all over her beak and she has stop laying also those two chicken when they were laying the last couple of eggs had blood all over them and a few drops over the perches.there is no blood now on this chicken and she is quite happy being on her own eating and drinking i am also feeding her fruit and veg to put some weight on her.. due to having a mite problem which we seem to have resolved due to cleaning the pen and run out with poultry sheild and covered everywhere with diatom powder the other chicken seemed fine but have started going off there layers food but all chickens having fruit and veg any other suggestion on feeding them up.

Hello, the best advice i can give you is to stop the friut and veg- give them only layers pellets ad-lib and a hanful of mixed corn- check the house again for red mite and the birds themselves for lice- clean out the coop again and powder the birds- see how they go- are they thin? and are they anemic looking? these are classic signs of red mite/lice infestation. too many treats and they wont eat their pellets- if they have access to grass/freerange they don't need extra fruit and veg. I hope your birds recover.
regards, David :)

Thanks david for you advice they do not usually come out into the garden because they trash it yes they are thin but not to much worried it will get worse thats why i am treating them

Fruit & veg can give them the runs, so best to avoid treats for a while. I would put some ACV in their water (20ml to a litre for a week) but use plastic containers not galvanised. Would also give clove of crushed garlic in the water & poultry spice in the food to give a bit of a boost.

ACV is apple cider vinegar, you can get this - I use Supargar & the poultry spice from your local horse feed merchant.

Speak to your vet asap.

Hi,

Sounds like worms to me - if she gets ill, you really need to take her to a vet. It could also be a number of other things.

I would make sure all of your birds are wormed with Flubenvet, not a herbal product (see 'Natural Parasite Control called into question in our poultry keeping news.)

There is information on ACV in our Chickens Health FAQ

With the feeding, I would add that the treats / fruit and the corn are not high enough in protein for them to put on weight. If they are really under weight, I would increase protein with an unmedicated growers pellet for a few weeks.

Good Luck....

Hi Tim
Thanks for the information found out what acv stood for when reading other peoples problems. as for the chicken she is not looking unwell but not solving the problem so fetching acv today and see how she goes for a couple of days and is it ok to put acv in for the other 4 chickens to to boost them up. thanks again for all your help andychick ;)

Yes, no problem giving it to all of them. Many poultry keepers will give ACV for 1 week per month in the water (plastic drinkers). It's a very good general tonic for them.

Hi Tim just to let you know she has been a lot better but she has had some long thin whiteish colour dead worms come out in her dropping but only on a night time do these come out in her dropping through the day she has no worms in her dropping and im not sure what worm this is called she has not leaked anymore liquid and her back end does not look to bad still eating and drinking and putting the acv in all there water now any chance you know which worms she has got. she is on her own but do i keep her away from the other birds while she has got this problem.

You need to worm all of the hens ASAP - she's full of them if they are coming out the back end... they will be causing lots of damage so you need to move fast before it's too late. All of the others will be the same without a doubt.

Flubenvet, mixed in her feed for 7 days - most will be dead after the first few days of treatment.

Hi tim any idea where i can get flubenvet asap says will have to wait 3-5 days on the computer and vets say upto 4 days to get it in any suggestion in the midlands

I know your asking Tim but in case hes not on for a while and you want to go and get it -- most agricultural stores/ feed merchants have it , but not all as they have to hold a drugs license for wormers etc so Id ring round the larger ones in your area or a poultry vet if you have one good luck -should not be hard to find . Ros

Oops sorry - it was a busy weekend building a new house for 20 ducks I didn't make it back to the forum..

I hope you've found some Flubenvet...

Tim

PS Thanks Ros!
