Hi,

I might be overreacting after reading lots on here about mycoplasma and gapeworm, but my favorite and top hen has been a little off colour for about 5 weeks now. She is eating & drinking fine and her behaviour is normal, (apart from now joining the others with the broodiness). About five weeks ago I noticed she was rattling, and had a litle nasal discharge- gave them all a week of Tylan. About two weeks later, she was still showing some respiratory symptoms. This last week I have noticed her not really wanting her favorite treat of grapes. Also I have seem her stretching her neck, but it is only occasionally. When I find a nice moth in the shed, Its Mollie that usually gets there first. Mike seems to think she has too many moths stuck in her windpipe? Could this has contributed?

I wormed them all (5 birds) first week in April with Flubenvent should I do them again now?
At the weekend I did put Vermex in their water- but to be honest I added it along with ACV and none of them seem to be drinking it.

Any advice would be most welcome as always,
Sharron

Hi, do you cut up the grapes or give them whole? My birds get no treats- just layers pellets, grass and some corn in the evening- they free range for part of the day catching bugs etc. I wouldn't be feeding them moths- some are not good to eat , it's ok if the hens find them but they normally know what to avoid :) They can't cause a windpipe problem as food goes down a different opening- :)
Unless she is looking ill, cut the treats down and see how she goes- relax and try to enjoy your birds :)
Despite all the scary stories on here   - bird illness is not a common thing- most keepers only have one or two ill birds in years- hope i have put your mind at ease!
regards, David :)

Hi David,

Yes thankyou- you have put my mind at ease. I do really enjoy them, but I spend so much time with them I think I notice the slightest change....

As for the grapes, I do cut them up,they have 4 between them each day. They have so much less corn now, becasue Mollie, the one I am concerned about, gobbles it all down before anyone else can get a look in. So I now throw a handful late afternoon/early evening on the ground- that way they all get a share. They too free range and eat lots of grass and bugs.

So I take they are not due for another worming week then?

Thanks Sharron.
