shell-less egg with part of the skin retained

Last night my loveliest bird (18 months old) laid an egg with no shell or skin. Only part of the skin was laid and the rest retained, so she is now looking unwell. I am not sure what to do.

Are you sure she's retaining some of the skin? Is the skin protruding from her vent?
If so, maybe try lubricating the vent with olive oil and very gently try easing out the remaining membrane. This may not work as its possible some egg contents have spilled into her vent, but at least some of the problem could perhaps be cleared.

She would normally expel it herself Chickenfan. We have had this before. As Marigold says, if the skin is protruding you can lubricate it. I just applied very light tension to it and she did the rest. You need to be so careful it isn't snagged in her vent because you can cause a prolapse. I'd put her in a cool dark place to let her relax anyway. She may have had a fright in the night?

Thank you Marigold and Chris. She laid a normal egg yesterday morning, then c10pm I saw her straining and watched her lay an egg with no shell or skin and only part of the skin. Over half of it is still inside her, but nothing is protruding. Today she was sitting quietly in a corner, so is now relaxing in a cat box so I can monitor her. I've tried some lubrication and steaming. She was perhaps upset yesterday as a hen had gone broody where she normally lays. I'll try applying a bit of tension. I'm not sure how well a vet would deal with this if she can't expel it naturally?
