was given five chinese painted quail as a christmas gift. We were told that there was 1 male and 4 female. From behaviour( males feeding females, the calls...and the mating and laying kind of gave it away) we concluded that we actually had 3 males and 2 females which was the cause of some rather nasty scuffles. We decided to buy 4 more quail which we had to get from the same supplier as they are difficult to get in the highlands of scotland...so again we cant be sure of sex til we monitor them......the issue we have is we decided to introduce the females to the newbies first so seperated the males off. The girls have settled in fantastically with the new group but the males have been behaving rather strangely. They have been taking turns at 'being the girl' as it were, feeding each other, mating noises, lying down for one another and bleeting. My question is can quail change sex if no female is available???
