after many weeks of having 2 birds that were eating the eggs i finally decided to get them culled after trying so many different things to stop them which nothing worked it was heart breaking to let them go over something so stupid but it had to be done but today there wasnt one broken egg , i got 4 eggs today out of 7 layers which is the first time in ages that i have had more then 2 eggs so i know i got the right birds but still cant get my head around it . :(
 
It's always hard when you decide they have to go, and I'm sorry for how you're feeling about it, but I'm sure you did the right thing. In a way they brought it on themselves, you just can't keep egg-eating birds, there's no point. I know you tried all sorts of ways to solve the problem, and didn't just give up on them. Give yourself a bit of time, and you will be glad things are back to normal and yo are getting eggs again.

I know what it is like to get rid of much loved birds, it is very sad, and I feel sorry for you.
I had to get rid of the most beautiful birds I have ever had, two Columbian blacktails, because they introduced the feather pecking to my layers, which is still going on after months of trying everything to stop it. I was lucky, I found someone who was willing to take a chance on them that new home, new surroundings, perhaps not being top dogs - so to speak, might break them of the habit, I hope it did. They were wonderful productive layers with huge brown eggs and they were such lovely natured hens.
You are lucky to have someone to do your culling, I have to do my own, which, believe me, can be truly heartbreaking.
 
A sad day indeed Karlooben, but very necessary. You were lucky they didn't train them all to it. We had to despatch 4 very good standard Blue Laced Wyandottes because of cannibalism -they ate the cockerel's comb! We were heartbroken as we raised them all from hatching eggs. We discovered Bumpa beak bits years later.
 
today i had 5 eggs and no broken ones had omlette tonight for the fist time in ages :lol: i do miss them though they were the real cheeky ones .

I admire your courage. I know you tried everything else first & only culled as a last resort; I hope I'll be as brave as you if the time comes.

I bet your omelette was gorgeous though. Shop-bought eggs just aren't the same, are they?
 
i know most poultry keepers have probably experienced egg eaters at some stage but i would not wish it on anyone as it becomes so frustrating but it makes me wander if only certain breeds are prone to it ? the thing that got me the most and annoyed me the most was my friend on the site who culls the old pooorly birds for me said he would not deal with the 2 egg eaters as they were healthy birds but yet he'll think nothing of going out and shooting any live animal in the wild thats healthy he reckoned there was nothing wrong with them eating the eggs :-)05 wierd i know .
 
Does your friend eat chicken? He'd want healthy birds killed for that, I'm sure...
I totally agree with you; his view doesn't tally with mine. (But then a lot of people don't see why I keep hens & get up half an hour earlier to clean them out each day, when I could just buy eggs from Sainburys :roll: ) At least he's prepared to help you when sick birds need euthanazing. That's better than nothing. Hopefully you won't need his help on that score in the near future.

To make you feel better, I discovered yesterday that one of my soft-egg-eating old girls has been teaching my new girls the delights of eating soft eggs. I only hope that they don't start on the hard shelled eggs that two of my new girls have just started laying... You've definitely done the right thing.
